1534 - The English Parliament passed the Act of Supremacy, making King Henry VIII head of the Church of England.

1912 - Vice President James S. Sherman, running for a second term of office with President William Howard Taft, died six days before Election Day.

1938 - The radio broadcast of "The War of the Worlds," starring Orson Welles, caused nationwide panic among listeners who believed an alien invasion was actually taking place.

1953 - Gen. George C. Marshall won the Nobel Peace Prize for originating the Marshall Plan.

1961 - The Soviet Union tested a hydrogen bomb, the "Tsar Bomba," with a force estimated at 50 megatons (over 3,500 times that of the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima during World War II.)

1972 - Forty-five people were killed when an Illinois Central Gulf commuter train was struck from behind by another train on Chicago's South Side.

1975 - The New York Daily News ran the headline "Ford to City: Drop Dead" a day after President Gerald R. Ford said he would veto any proposed federal bailout of New York City.

1995 - By a razor-thin vote of 50.6 percent to 49.4 percent, Federalists prevailed over separatists in a referendum on Quebec seceding from Canada.

2005 - The late Rosa Parks became the first woman to lie in honor at the U.S. Capitol Rotunda; President George W. Bush and congressional leaders paused to lay wreaths by the casket of the civil rights icon.

2018 - Notorious gangster James "Whitey" Bulger was found beaten to death at a federal prison in West Virginia; the 89-year-old former Boston crime boss and longtime FBI informant had been transferred there just hours earlier.

1945 - Brooklyn Dodgers manager Branch Rickey signs Jackie Robinson to a contract with the Montreal Royals, the top minor league affiliate of the Dodgers.

1954 - The 24-second shot clock is used for the first time in the NBA.

1974 - Muhammad Ali knocked out George Foreman in the eighth round in Kinshasa, Zaire (the "Rumble in the Jungle") to regain the world heavyweight championship.

1992 - Magic Johnson of the Los Angeles Lakers played his last game in the NBA before retiring for the second and last time.

2001 - In New York City, President George W. Bush threw out the first pitch at Game 3 of the World Series between the New York Yankees and the Arizona Diamondbacks.

2001 - Michael Jordan returned to the NBA as a player with the Washington Wizards after a 3 1/2 year retirement.

2013 - The Boston Red Sox defeated the St. Louis Cardinals in six games to win their third World Series in ten years.

2016 - The Oakland Raiders break the single game record for most penalties in an NFL game with 23 in a win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

2019 - The Washington Nationals defeat the Houston Astros in seven games to win their first World Series.

2023 - According to Forbes, former basketball player Magic Johnson becomes the fourth athlete to become a billionaire, joining Michael Jordan, LeBron James and Tiger Woods.
