1793 - French queen Marie Antoinette was guillotined for treason.

1859 - Abolitionist John Brown and his men captured the U.S. arsenal at Harper's Ferry.

1916 - Margaret Sanger opened the first birth control clinic in New York City.

1962 - The Cuban Missile Crisis began as President John F. Kennedy was informed that reconnaissance photographs had revealed the presence of missile bases in Cuba.

1964 - China detonated its first atomic bomb.

1970 - Anwar Sadat was elected president of Egypt, succeeding the late Gamal Abdel Nasser.

1973 - Henry Kissinger and Le Duc Tho, who negotiated a cease-fire in the Vietnam War, were named winners of the Nobel Peace Prize; Tho declined the award.

1978 - Polish Cardinal Karol Wojtyla was elected pope by the Roman Catholic Church's College of Cardinals; he took the name John Paul II.

1984 - Anglican Bishop Desmond Tutu of South Africa was named winner of the Nobel Peace Prize.

1987 - Rescuers freed Jessica McClure, an 18-month-old girl who had been trapped in an abandoned well for 58 hours in Midland, Texas.

1991 - A deadly shooting rampage took place in Killeen, Texas, as a gunman opened fire at a Luby’s Cafeteria, killing 23 people before taking his own life.

1995 - Hundreds of thousands of black men gathered in Washington, D.C. for the "Million Man March" led by Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan.

1998 - David Trimble and John Hume were named recipients of the Nobel Peace Prize for brokering the Northern Ireland peace accord.

2001 - Twelve U.S. Senate offices were closed when a letter to Sen. Tom Daschle was found to contain anthrax.

2002 - President George W. Bush signed a congressional resolution authorizing war against Iraq.

2002 - The White House announced that North Korea had disclosed the existence of a secret nuclear weapons program.

2011 - The Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial was formally dedicated in Washington, D.C.

2016 - Singer Randy Travis, fiddler Charlie Daniels and producer Fred Foster were inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame.

2017 - Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, who had been captured and held by the Taliban for five years after walking away from his post in Afghanistan, pleaded guilty to desertion and endangering his comrades. (A military judge later decided not to send him to prison.)

2020 - A French history teacher who had opened a discussion with his high school students about caricatures of Islam’s Prophet Muhammad was beheaded on a street northwest of Paris; police shot and killed the suspect, an 18-year-old radical Islamist.

2020 - Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey said the company had been wrong to block weblinks to an unverified story focusing on the son of Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden.

1909 - Minnesota defeats Nebraska 14-0.


1909 - The Pittsburgh Pirates defeat the Detroit Tigers in seven games to win the World Series.

1912 - The Boston Red Sox defeat the New York Giants in eight games to win the World Series. (Series was extended to eight games as one game ended in a tie due to darkness.)

1915 - Nebraska defeats Washburn 47-0.

1920 - Notre Dame defeats Nebraska 16-7.

1926 - Nebraska defeats Washington University (Missouri) 20-6.

1937 - Nebraska and Oklahoma played to a 0-0 tie.

1943 - Iowa State defeats Nebraska 27-6.


1946 - Gordie Howe (Detroit Red Wings) played his first NHL game.

1948 - #2 Notre Dame defeats Nebraska 44-13.

1954 - Nebraska defeats Oregon State 27-7.


1960 - The National League voted to admit Houston and New York to the league. It was the first structural change since 1900.

1962 - The New York Yankees defeat the San Francisco Giants in seven games to win their 20th World Series.

1968 - American athletes Tommie Smith and John Carlos sparked controversy at the Mexico City Olympics by giving “Black power” salutes during a victory ceremony after they’d won gold and bronze medals in the 200-meter race.

1968 - The Milwaukee Bucks play their inaugural NBA game, losing to the Chicago Bulls 89-84.

1969 - The New York Mets defeated the Baltimore Orioles in five games to win the World Series.

1971 - #1 Nebraska defeats Kansas 55-0.

1982 - #6 Nebraska defeats Kansas State 42-13.


1983 - The Baltimore Orioles defeat the Philadelphia Phillies in seven games to win the World Series.

1992 - Magic Johnson played his first professional game since coming out of retirement.

1993 - #6 Nebraska defeats Kansas State 45-28.

1996 - In Guatemala City, at least 84 people died and 147 were injured when a stampede of soccer fans occurred before the 1998 World Cup qualifying match between Guatemala and Costa Rica.

2004 - Nebraska defeats Baylor 59-27.

2010 - Texas upsets #5 Nebraska 20-13.


2016 - Ed Whitlock at age 85 becomes oldest person to complete a marathon under 4 hours, at Toronto Waterfront Marathon in 3 hours 56 minutes.
