1864 - A Colorado militia launched an unprovoked attack on an encampment of Cheyenne and Arapahoe tribal members, killing an estimated 230 people in the Sand Creek Massacre. (After the massacre, the backlash was so severe the U.S. government not only acknowledged wrongdoing, but promised reparations of land and cash to survivors and relatives of victims.)

1929 - Commander Richard E. Byrd and a crew of three became the first to fly over the South Pole.

1947 - The United Nations voted to grant the Jewish people a homeland to be established in mandate Palestine.

1961 - Enos the chimp was launched from Cape Canaveral aboard the Mercury-Atlas 5 spacecraft, which orbited the Earth twice before returning.

1963 - The Beatles released "I Want to Hold Your Hand" in Britain.

1981 - Film star Natalie Wood drowned at age 43 while boating off California's Santa Catalina Island with her husband Robert Wagner and actor Christopher Walken.

1986 - Actor Cary Grant died in Davenport, Iowa at age 82.

1987 - A Korean Air 707 jetliner en route from Abu Dhabi to Bangkok was destroyed by a bomb planted by North Korean agents, killing all 115 people on board.

2001 - George Harrison of the Beatles died after a battle with cancer at age 58.

2012 - The United Nations voted overwhelmingly to grant Palestine non-observer member state status, a vote that came exactly 65 years after the General Assembly adopted a plan to divide Palestine into separate states for Jews and Arabs. (The 2012 vote was 138 in favor; nine members, including the United States, voted against while 41 abstained.)

2018 - In a surprise guilty plea, former Trump lawyer Michael Cohen confessed that he had lied to Congress about a Moscow real estate deal he pursued on Trump's behalf during the 2016 presidential campaign.

2022 - Oath Keepers founder Stewart Rhodes was convicted of seditious conspiracy for a violent plot to overturn Democrat Joe Biden's presidential win, handing the Justice Department a major victory in its massive prosecution of the Jan. 6, 2021 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol. (Rhodes would be sentenced to 18 years in prison in May 2023.)

1890 - Navy defeated Army by a score of 24-0 in the first Army-Navy football game. The game was played at West Point, NY.

1934 - The Chicago Bears defeat the Detroit Lions 19-16 in the first NFL game broadcast nationally.

1960 - Navy running back Joe Bellino wins the Heisman Trophy.

1962 - Major League Baseball decided to return to just one All-Star Game a year beginning in 1963, ending a four-year run of two such games per season.

1987 - Joe Montana (San Francisco 49ers) completed a record 22 consecutive passes.

1987 - Venice Glenn (San Diego Chargers) ran back an interception for 103 yards. It was an NFL record.

1992 - Jerry Rice of the San Francisco 49ers caught his 100th career touchdown pass.

1992 - Dennis Byrd of the New York Jets was paralyzed after suffering a neck injury in a game against the Kansas City Chiefs.
