1847 - The American Medical Association was organized in Philadelphia.

1915 - A German torpedo sank the British liner Lusitania off the Irish coast, killing nearly 1,200 people.

1939 - Germany and Italy announced a military and political alliance, the Rome-Berlin Axis.

1949 - Ponder won the 75th Kentucky Derby.

1951 - The International Olympic Committee voted to allow the Soviet Union to participate in the Olympic Games.

1959 - The largest crowd in major league history of 93,103 attended Roy Campanella Night at the L.A. Coliseum. The Los Angeles Dodgers beat the New York Yankees 6-2 in the exhibition game.

1972 - The Los Angeles Lakers defeated the New York Knicks in five games for the NBA championship.

1977 - Seattle Slew won the Kentucky Derby.

1982 - A federal jury ruled that the NFL violated antitrust laws by preventing the Oakland Raiders from moving to Los Angeles.
