1802 - Washington, D.C., was incorporated as a city.

1937 - Margaret Mitchell won the Pulitzer Prize in fiction for "Gone With the Wind."

1947 - Japan's postwar constitution took effect.

1948 - The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in Shelley v. Kraemer that it is unconstitutional for a court to enforce a restrictive covenant which prevents people of a certain race from owning or occupying property.

1960 - The Harvey Schmidt-Tom Jones musical "The Fantasticks" began a nearly 42-year run at New York's Sullivan Street Playhouse.

1979 - Margaret Thatcher became Britain's first female prime minister.

1987 - The Miami Herald said its reporters had observed a young woman spending "Friday night and most of Saturday" at a Washington townhouse belonging to Democratic presidential candidate Gary Hart. (The woman was later identified as Donna Rice; the resulting controversy torpedoed Hart's presidential bid.)

1999 - Kansas and Oklahoma were hit by an outbreak of more than 55 tornadoes, including one measured at F5 on the Fujita scale.

2001 - The United States, a member of the U.N. Human Rights Commission since its inception, lost its seat. (It would be restored the following year.)

2003 - New Hampshire's symbol, the granite "Old Man of the Mountain," collapsed in the state's Franconia Mountains.

2006 - A federal jury in Alexandria, Virginia rejected the death penalty for al-Qaeda conspirator Zacarias Moussaoui, deciding he should spend life in prison for his role in 9/11.

2015 - Two gunmen were shot and killed by a police officer in Garland, Texas after they opened fire outside a purposely provocative contest for cartoon depictions of the Prophet Muhammad.

2016 - In a stunning triumph for a political outsider, Donald Trump all but clinched the Republican presidential nomination with a resounding victory in Indiana that knocked rival Ted Cruz out of the race.

2018 - A federal grand jury in Detroit indicted former Volkswagen CEO Martin Winterkorn on charges stemming from the company's diesel emissions cheating scandal.

2021 - Microsoft founder and former chairman Bill Gates and his wife Melinda announced they were divorcing after 27 years of marriage but said they would continue to work together at the world's largest private charitable foundation.

2022 - President Joe Biden blasted as "radical" a leaked Supreme Court draft opinion throwing out the Roe v. Wade abortion rights ruling after 50 years. Chief Justice John Roberts said he had ordered an investigation into what he called an "egregious breach of trust."

1910 - The Intercollegiate Athletic Association of the United States changes its name to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).

1936 - Joe DiMaggio (New York Yankees) made his major league debut.

1977 - The Tampa Bay Buccaneers select Ricky Bell from USC with the first pick in the NFL Draft.

1979 - The Buffalo Bills select Tom Cousineau of Ohio State with the first pick in the NFL Draft.

1980 - Ferguson Jenkins (Texas Rangers) became the fourth player to win 100 games in the American League and the National League.

1980 - Willie McCovey (San Francisco Giants) hit his 521st and final home run.

1986 - At age 54. legendary horse jockey Bill Shoemaker became the oldest person to win the Kentucky Derby, riding Ferdinand to victory.

2007 - The Golden State Warriors defeated the Dallas Mavericks in Game 6. It was the first time a No. 8 seed team had defeated a No. 1 seed team in a 7-game playoff series.

2011 - At age 22, Derrick Rose of the Chicago Bulls became the youngest recipient of the NBA's MVP award.

2018 - Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan becomes the first player in NFL history to earn $30 million per year after signing a $150 million contract extension.

2023 - Shohei Ohtani joins New York Yankees legend Babe Ruth as the only pitcher in Major League history to strike out 500 batters and hit 100 career home runs.
