1819 - Queen Victoria, Britain's longest-serving monarch, was born in London.

1844 - Samuel Morse transmitted the first telegraph message, in which he asked, "What hath God wrought?"

1883 - The Brooklyn Bridge, linking Manhattan and Brooklyn in New York City, opened to traffic.

1899 - W.T. McCullough of Boston opened the first public garage. One could rent space for selling, storing and repairing vehicles.

1937 - The U.S. Supreme Court upheld the constitutionality of the Social Security Act of 1935.

1941 - The German battleship Bismarck sank the British battle cruiser HMS Hood in the North Atlantic, killing all but three of the 1,418 men on board.

1957 - Anti-American rioting broke out in Taipei, Taiwan, over the acquittal of a U.S. Army sergeant who had shot and killed a Chinese man.

1958 - The United Press and the International News Service merged to form United Press International (UPI).

1962 - Astronaut Scott Carpenter became the second American to orbit the Earth as he flew aboar Aurora 7.

1976 - The British and French Concordes made their first commercial flights.

1977 - In a surprise move, the Kremlin ousted Soviet President Nikolai Podgorny from the Communist Party's ruling Politburo.

1980 - Iran rejected a call by the World Court in The Hague to release the American hostages.

1994 - Four men convicted of bombing New York's World Trade Center in 1993 were each sentenced to 240 years in prison.

2000 - Israeli troops pulled out of Lebanon after 18 consecutive years of occupation.

2001 - Vermont Sen. James Jeffords quit the Republican Party and became an Independent, giving Democrats control of the Senate.

1878 - The first American bicycle race was held in Boston.

1902 - Bill Bradley (Cleveland) became the first American League player to hit home runs in four consecutive games.

1918 - Cleveland defeated the New York Yankees 3-2 in the 19th inning.

1929 - The Detroit Tigers defeated the Chicago White Sox 6-4 in 21 innings.

1935 - Major League Baseball's first night game was played at Cincinnati's Crosley Field as the hometown Reds defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 2-1.

1951 - Willie Mays began playing for the New York Giants.

1962 - The officials of the National Football League ruled that halftime of regular season games would be cut to 15 minutes.

1964 - In Lima, Peru, a riot and panic followed an unpopular ruling by a referee in a soccer game between Peru and Argentina. More than 300 people were killed and over 500 were injured.

1967 - The AFL granted a franchise to the Cincinnati Bengals.

1980 - The New York Islanders defeat the Philadelphia Flyers to win the Stanley Cup.

1981 - Bobby Unser wins, loses and wins a controversial Indianapolis 500 race.

1984 - The Detroit Tigers won a record 17th consecutive road game.

1986 - The Montreal Canadiens won other 23rd Stanley Cup championship after defeating the Calgary Flames.

1987 - Al Unser Sr. won his fourth Indianapolis 500.

1989 - Lee Gutterman (New York Yankees) set a record for pitching 30 and 2/3 innings before giving up his first run of the season.

1990 - The Edmonton Oilers won their fifth Stanley Cup title after beating the Boston Bruins.

1990 - Andre Dawson of the Chicago Cubs was intentionally walked five times during a game.

1992 - Al Unser Jr. wins the Indianapolis 500.

2003 - At the Colonial in Fort Worth, TX, Annika Sorentam missed the cut by four shots. Two days early she had become the first woman in 58 years to play in the PGA.
