1775 - John Hancock was elected president of the Continental Congress, succeeding Peyton Randolph.

1819 - Queen Victoria, Britain's longest-reigning monarch, was born in London.

1830 - The first passenger railroad in the United States began service between Baltimore and Ellicott Mills, Maryland.

1844 - Samuel Morse transmitted the first telegraph message, in which he asked, "What hath God wrought?"

1883 - The Brooklyn Bridge, linking Brooklyn and Manhattan, was opened to traffic.

1899 - W.T. McCullough of Boston opened the first public garage. One could rent space for selling, storing and repairing vehicles.

1937 - In a set of rulings, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the constitutionality of the Social Security Act of 1935.

1958 - United Press International was formed through a merger of the United Press and the International News Service.

1962 - Astronaut Scott Carpenter became the second American to orbit the Earth as he flew aboard Aurora 7.

1976 - Britain and France began trans-Atlantic Concorde service to Washington, D.C.

1980 - Iran rejected a call by the World Court in The Hague to release the American hostages.

1994 - Four men convicted of bombing New York's World Trade Center in 1993 were each sentenced to 240 years in prison.

2000 - Israeli troops pulled out of southern Lebanon, ending 18 years of occupation.

2001 - Vermont Sen. James Jeffords quit the Republican Party and became an Independent, giving Democrats control of the Senate.

1902 - Bill Bradley of Cleveland is the first American League player to hit four consecutive home runs. (The feat would not be repeated until Babe Ruth accomplished it in 1918.)

1918 - The Cleveland Indians beat the New York Yankees 3-2 in 19 innings.

1929 - The Detroit Tigers beat the Chicago White Sox 6-5 in 21 innings.

1935 - The first major league baseball game to be played at night took place at Cincinnati's Crosley Field. The Cincinnati Reds defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 2-1.

1936 - Tony Lazerri makes two grand slams (11 RBIs); Ben Chapman sets record by reaching first 7 times safely, New York Yankees beat Philadelphia Athletics 25-2.

1950 - "Sweetwater" (Nat) Clifton's contract was purchased by the New York Knicks. Sweetwater played for the Harlem Globetrotters.

1964 - In Lima, Peru, a riot and panic followed an unpopular ruling by a referee in a soccer game between Peru and Argentina. More than 300 people were killed and over 500 were injured.

1967 - The AFL awards a franchise to the Cincinnati Bengals.

1980 - The New York Islanders defeat the Philadelphia Flyers in six games to win the Stanley Cup.

1981 - Bobby Unser wins, loses and then wins a controversial Indianapolis 500 race.

1984 - The Detroit Tigers win their 17th consecutive road game, tying the major league record set by the 1916 New York Giants.

1986 - The Montreal Canadiens beat the Calgary Flames in five games to win the Stanley Cup. It was the 23rd championship for the Canadiens.

1987 - Al Unser joins A.J. Foyt as the only four-time winners of the Indianapolis 500.

1990 - The Edmonton Oilers defeat the Boston Bruins to win the Stanley Cup for the fifth time.

1990 - Andre Dawson of the Chicago Cubs is walked intentionally five times in one game.

1992 - Al Unser Jr. wins the Indianapolis 500.

1998 - In Indianapolis, Indiana, the Indianapolis 500 race is held. Eddie Cheever Junior wins with an average speed of 145.155 mph. A 1998 Corvette is official pace car, driven by Parnelli Jones.

2003 - At the Colonial in Fort Worth, TX, Annika Sorentam missed the cut by four shots. Two days early she had become the first woman in 58 years to play in the PGA.

2009 - In Indianapolis, Indiana, the 90th running of the Indianapolis 500 race is held. Winner is Helio Castroneves of Team Penske.
