1542 - Spanish explorer Hernando De Soto died while searching for gold along the banks of the Mississippi River.

1832 - The first Democratic National Convention got underway, in Baltimore.

1840 - New Zealand was declared a British colony.

1881 - Clara Barton founded the American Red Cross.

1924 - Nathan Leopold Jr. and Richard Loeb, two students at the University of Chicago, killed a 14-year-old boy in a "thrill killing".

1927 - Charles A. Lindbergh landed his Spirit of St. Louis near Paris, completing the first solo airplane flight across the Atlantic Ocean.

1956 - The United States detonated the first airborne hydrogen bomb, over Bikini Atoll in the Pacific.

1979 - Former San Francisco City Supervisor Dan White was convicted of voluntary manslaughter in the shooting deaths of Mayor George Moscone and Supervisor Harvey Milk.

1980 - "The Empire Strikes Back", the second movie in the "Star Wars" series, was released.

1989 - In Hong Kong, approximately one million people took to the streets to show their support for students protesting for democratic reforms in China's Tiananmen Square.

1998 - A 15-year-old student opened fire inside Thurston High School in Springfield, Oregon, killing two students and wounding 23, one day after killing his parents.

1999 - Susan Lucci, star of the ABC soap opera "All My Children", won her first Daytime Emmy Award for best actress in the 19th straight year she was nominated.

2008 - David Cook won the seventh season of "American Idol".

1881 - The United States Lawn Tennis Association was formed in New York City.

1904 - Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) was founded.

1943 - The Chicago White Sox defeated the Washington Senators 1-0 in just 89 minutes, the fastest nine inning game in American League history.

1948 - Joe DiMaggio of the New York Yankees hit for the cycle.

1952 - The Brooklyn Dodgers scored a major league record 15 runs in the first inning en route to a 19-1 win over the Cincinnati Reds.

1979 - The Montreal Canadiens defeated the New York Rangers for the Stanley Cup.

1996 - Ken Griffey Jr. became the eighth youngest player to hit 200 home runs.

1997 - Roger Clemens of the Boston Red Sox picked up his 200th win.

2000 - Nebraska defeated Baylor 11-3 to win the Big 12 Baseball Tournament

2011 - Bernard Hopkins, at age 46, supplanted George Foreman as boxing's oldest title holder when he won the WBC light heavyweight championship with a unanimous decision over Jean Pascal.

2012 - Former West Virginia football coach Bill Stewart passed away from a heart attack at the age of 59.

2013 - The USGA and the Royal & Ancient Golf Club announced a rule change prohibiting anchored strokes. In essence, players will not be allowed to place the shaft of long putters against their bodies while making a stroke. The rule goes into effect in January of 2016.

2013 - Mike Trout of the Los Angeles Angels hit for the cycle.

2014 - Bill Elliott was inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame.
