1519 - Artist Leonardo da Vinci died.

1536 - Anne Boleyn, the second wife of King Henry VIII, was arrested and charged with adultery; she was beheaded 17 days later.

1670 - The Hudson Bay Co. was chartered by England's King Charles II.

1863 - Confederate Gen. Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson was accidentally wounded by his own men at Chancellorsville, Virginia. He died eight days later.

1885 - Good Housekeeping magazine was published for the first time.

1890 - The Oklahoma Territory was organized.

1932 - Jack Benny's first radio show debuted on the NBC Blue Network.

1941 - General Mills began shipping a new cereal called "Cheerioats" to six test markets. (The cereal was later renamed "Cheerios".)

1945 - The Soviet Union announced the fall of Berlin and the Allies announced the surrender of Nazi troops in Italy and parts of Austria.

1946 - Violence erupted during a foiled escape attempt at the Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary in San Francisco Bay; the "Battle of Alcatraz" claimed the lives of three inmates and two correctional officers before it was put down two days later.

1955 - Tennessee Williams won the Pulitzer Prize in Drama for Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.

1965 - Intelsat 1, also known as the Early Bird Satellite, was first used to transmit television signals across the Atlantic Ocean.

1972 - J. Edgar Hoover, head of the FBI for 48 years, died at age 77.

1982 - The Weather Channel made its cable television debut.

1994 - Nelson Mandela claimed victory in South Africa's first democratic elections.

1997 - Tony Blair, at age 44, became Britain's youngest prime minister in 185 years.

2012 - Opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi was sworn in to Myanmar's military-backed parliament.

2012 - A pastel version of "The Scream", by painter Edvard Munch, sold for $120 million in a New York City auction. The transaction set a new world record for an auctioned piece of art.

2014 - Prince William and his wife Catherine, Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, announced the birth of their daughter, Charlotte, who became fourth in line of succession to the British throne and the fifth great-grandchild of Queen Elizabeth II.

1903 - Judge Himes wins the Kentucky Derby.

1904 - Elwood wins the Kentucky Derby.

1906 - Sir Huron wins the Kentucky Derby.

1908 - The original version of "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" was published by Von Tilzer's Music Co.

1909 - Honus T. Wagner steals his way around every base in the first inning of a game against the Chicago Cubs.

1917 - Cincinnati Reds' Fred Tooney and Chicago White Sox' Hippo Vaughn pitch duel no-hitter, Vaughn gives up two hits and a run in the 10th, so Cincinnati wins 1-0.

1920 - The first game of the National Negro Baseball League is played in Indianapolis.

1923 - Walter Johnson of the Washington Senators pitches his 100th career shutout.

1936 - Bold Venture wins the Kentucky Derby.

1939 - New York Yankees first baseman Lou Gehrig's streak of 2,130 consecutive games played came to an end when the ailing slugger removed himself from the lineup.

1942 - Shut Out wins the Kentucky Derby.

1953 - Dark Star wins the Kentucky Derby.

1954 - Stan Musial of the St. Louis Cardinals hits five home runs in a baseball doubleheader against the New York Giants.

1958 - New York Yankees threaten to broadcast games nationwide if National League goes ahead with plans to broadcast games into New York City.

1959 - Tomy Lee wins the Kentucky Derby.

1964 - Northern Dancer wins the Kentucky Derby.

1967 - The Toronto Maple Leafs defeat the Montreal Canadiens to win the Stanley Cup.

1968 - The Boston Celtics defeat the Los Angeles Lakers in six games to win the NBA championship.

1970 - Jockey Diane Crump became the first woman to ride in the Kentucky Derby; she finished in 15th place aboard Fathom. The winning horse was Dust Commander.

1978 - The Houston Oilers selected Texas running back Earl Campbell with the first pick in the NFL Draft.

1988 - Pete Rose of the Cincinnati Reds was suspended for 30 games for pushing an umpire.

1988 - The Baltimore Orioles signed a 15-year lease to remain in Baltimore and get a new ballpark.

1992 - Lil E Tee wins the Kentucky Derby.

1995 - The Montreal Expos are caught batting out of order against the New York Mets in the 6th inning.

1998 - Real Quiet wins the Kentucky Derby.

2002 - Mike Cameron of the Seattle Mariners hit four home runs in a game against the Chicago White Sox.

2009 - Canadian horse Mine That Bird wins the Kentucky Derby.

2009 - The Dallas Cowboys practice bubble collapsed during a storm during a practice. At the time, 27 players were working out. Almost all were drafted last weekend or signed as undrafted rookies. Twelve people were injured.

2014 - American Pharoah rallied in the stretch to beat Firing Line by a length and give trainer Bob Baffert his first Kentucky Derby crown since 2002.
