1860 - The Republican Party convention in Chicago nominated Abraham Lincoln for president.

1896 - The Supreme Court endorsed the concept of "separate but equal" racial segregation in Plessy v. Ferguson, a precedent that was overturned in Brown v. Board of Education in 1954.

1897 - A public reading of Bram Stroker's new novel "Dracula, or, The Un-dead" was staged in London.

1912 - Philadelphia Athletics beat Detroit Tigers 24-2, who use amateurs protesting Ty Cobb's suspension.

1933 - First major league All-Star Game announced for July 6 at Comiskey Park. It will be played as part of the Chicago World's Fair.

1971 - The Utah Stars defeat the Kentucky Colonels in seven games for the ABA championship.

1971 - The Montreal Canadiens defeat the Chicago Blackhawks in seven games for the Stanley Cup.

1978 - Sarajevo, Yugoslavia is selected to host the 1984 Winter Olympics while Los Angeles is selected as host of the 1984 Summer Games.

1982 - Detroit Tigers' outfielder Larry Herndon is 14th player in major league history to hit four consecutive homeruns.

1988 - In the Oakland Athletics' 39th game of the season, pitcher Dave Stewart breaks major league record with his 12th balk en route to 16.

2004 - Randy Johnson, age 40, became the oldest pitcher in major league history to throw a perfect game, leading the Arizona Diamondbacks over the Atlanta Braves 2-0.
