1770 - Marie Antoinette, age 14, married the future King Louis XVI of France, who was 15.

1866 - Congress authorized minting of the first five-cent piece, also known as the "Shield nickel".

1868 - The U.S. Senate failed by one vote to convict President Andrew Johnson as it took its first ballot on one of 11 articles of impeachment against him. (He was acquitted of all charges.)

1916 - During World War I, France and Britain secretly ratified the Sykes-Picot Agreement, which concerned postwar partitioning of Arab lands held by the Ottoman Empire.

1920 - Joan o Arc was canonized by Pope Benedict XV.

1929 - The first Academy Awards were presented during a banquet at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel. The term "Oscars" was not used to describe the statuettes given to actors and actresses until 1931.

1939 - The federal government began its first food stamp program in Rochester, New York.

1946 - The Irving Berlin musical "Annie Get Your Gun" opened on Broadway.

1960 - The first working laser was demonstrated at Hughes Research Laboratories in Malibu, California by physicist Theodore Maiman.

1960 - A harsh exchange between Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev and President Dwight D. Eisenhower doomed a much heralded summit between the two nations, following the Soviet downing of an American U-2 reconnaissance plane.

1966 - The album "Blonde on Blonde" by Bob Dylan was released.

1966 - The album "Pet Sounds" by the Beach Boys was released.

1966 - China launched the Cultural Revolution, a radical, youth-driven reform movement aimed at bolstering Chairman Mao Zedong while purging the country of "counter-revolutionaries." It's been estimated that during the decade of upheaval that followed, hundreds of thousands of people, perhaps more, died as a direct or indirect result of the Cultural Revolution.

1975 - Japanese climber Junko Tabei became the first woman to reach the summit of Mount Everest.

1988 - The Supreme Court, in California v. Greenwood, ruled that police can search discarded garbage without a search warrant.

1988 - U.S. Surgeon General C. Everett Koop released a report declaring nicotine was addictive in ways similar to heroin and cocaine.

1990 - Entertainer Sammy Davis Jr. died at age 64.

1990 - "Muppets" creator Jim Henson died at age 53.

1991 - Queen Elizabeth II became the first British monarch to address the U.S. Congress.

1997 - Zaire's president, Mobutu Sese Soko, ended 32 years of autocratic rule, giving control of the country to rebel forces.

2002 - The remains of kidnapped Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl were unearthed in Pakistan.

2003 - Five simultaneous suicide attacks claimed the lives of 33 victims and a dozen suicide bombers in Casablanca, Morocco.

2005 - Newsweek magazine retracted a story that claimed investigators had found evidence the Quran was desecrated by interrogators at the U.S. naval prison at Guantanamo Bay. The story had sparked deadly protests in Afghanistan.

2006 - The Pentagon released the first video images of American Airlines Flight 77 crashing into the military headquarters and killing 189 people on 9/11.

2007 - Nicolas Sarkozy took over from Jacques Chirac as France's president.

1939 - The Philadelphia Athletics and the Cleveland Indians met at Shibe Park in Philadelphia for the first baseball game to be played under the lights in the American League.

1953 - Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Curt Simmons gives up a single, then retires the next 27 batters in a row.

1972 - Greg Luzinski hit a 500-foot home run in which the ball hit the Liberty Bell monument in Philadelphia's Veterans Stadium.

1975 - Muhammad Ali KO's Ron Lyle in the 11th round for the heavyweight championship.

1976 - The Montreal Canadiens sweep the Philadelphia Flyers to win the Stanley Cup.

1977 - Muhammad Ali beats Alfredo Evangelist in 15 rounds for the heavyweight title.

1979 - The National League approves the sale of the Houston Astros from Ford Motors to John J. McMullen for $19 million.

1980 - The Los Angeles Lakers defeat the Philadelphia 76ers in six games to win the NBA championship.

1981 - Craig Reynolds of the Houston Astros hits three triples in a game against the Chicago Cubs.

1985 - Michael Jordan of the Chicago Bulls is named NBA Rookie of the Year.

1994 - Tennis star Jennifer Capriati was arrested on charges of possession of marijuana.

1996 - Sammy Sosa of the Chicago Cubs becomes the first player in franchise history to hit two home runs in one inning.

2006 - For the fourth time New York Yankees history, the team overcomes a nine-run deficit defeating the Texas Rangers at the Stadium, 14-13.
