1776 - Virginia authorized its delegation to the Continental Congress to support independence from Britain.

1862 - The U.S. Department of Agriculture was created by an act of Congress.

1886 - Poet Emily Dickinson died at age 55.

1911 - The Supreme Court ordered the dissolution of Standard Oil Company, headed by John D. Rockefeller, ruling it was in violation of the Sherman Antitrust Act.

1918 - The first air mail route was established in the United States, between New York and Washington, D.C. with a stop at Philadelphia.

1930 - Ellen Church, the first airline stewardess, went on duty aboard a United Airlines Flight from San Francisco to Cheyenne, Wyoming.

1940 - The original McDonald's restaurant was opened in San Bernardino, California by Richard and Maurice McDonald.

1948 - Hours after declaring its independence, the new state of Israel was attacked by Transjordan, Egypt, Syria, Iraq and Lebanon.

1969 - Supreme Court Justice Abe Fortas resigned amid a controversy over his past legal fees.

1970 - Two black students at Jackson State College in Mississippi were killed when police opened fire during student protests.

1972 - Alabama Gov. George Wallace was shot while campaigning for the Democratic presidential nomination in Laurel, Maryland, and was left permanently paralyzed below the waist.

1988 - The Soviet Union began withdrawing its troops from Afghanistan.

2001 - A runaway freight train rolled about 70 miles through Ohio with no one aboard before a railroad employee jumped onto the locomotive and brought it to a stop.

2003 - Texas Democrats returned home after a self-imposed four-day exile in Oklahoma in a dispute over a redistricting plan.

2006 - A defiant Saddam Hussein refused to enter a plea at his trial in Iraq for crimes against humanity, insisting he was still the country's president.

2006 - The United States removed Libya from its list of terrorist states.

2007 - The Rev. Jerry Falwell, who helped build the Christian right into a political force, died at age 73.

2007 - Yolanda King, the daughter of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King, died at age 51.

2008 - California's Supreme Court ruled gay couples in the state could marry -- a victory for the gay rights movement that was overturned by the passage of Proposition 8 the following November.

1906 - New York Giants' Hooks Wiltse strikes out four batters in one inning.

1912 - Detroit Tigers' Ty Cobb rushes a heckler at a New York Highlanders' game and is suspended.

1918 - Washington Senators' Walter Johnson pitches 1-0, 18-inning game.

1919 - Brooklyn Dodgers score ten runs in 13th inning to beat Cincinnati Reds 10-0.

1926 - The New York Rangers were officially granted a franchise in the NHL. The NHL also announced that Chicago and Detroit would be joining the league in November.

1941 - Joe DiMaggio began his major league baseball hitting streak of 56 games. The streak ended on July 17th.

1953 - Heavyweight Rocky Marciano knocks out Joe Walcott in Chicago, Illinois for heavyweight boxing title.

1959 - 100th anniversary of first college baseball game, between Amherst and Williams; Teams re-enact the original contest.

1970 - The International Olympic Committee votes to exclude South Africa from Olympic competition.

1973 - Nolan Ryan pitches his first no-hitter as the California Angels defeat the Kansas City Royals 3-0.

1993 - The Alamodome opens in San Antonio.

1994 - The Montreal Expos retire the first number in franchise history: Rusty Staub's #10.

2004 - South Africa is awarded the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
