1907 - Actress Katharine Hepburn was born in Hartford, Connecticut.

1932 - The body of the kidnapped son of Charles and Anne Lindbergh was found in a wooded area of Hopewell, New Jersey.

1937 - Britain's King George VI was crowned at Westminster Abbey in London.

1943 - During World War II, Axis forces in North Africa surrendered.

1949 - The Soviet Union announced an end to the Berlin blockade.

1965 - West Germany and Israel established diplomatic relations.

1970 - The Senate voted unanimously to confirm Harry A. Blackmun as a Supreme Court justice.

2009 - Five Miami men were convicted in a plot to blow up FBI buildings and Chicago's Sears Tower.

2011 - A German court convicted retired U.S. autoworker John Demjanjuk of being an accessory to the murder of tens of thousands of Jews as a Nazi death camp guard. (Demjanjuk, who maintained his innocence, died in 2012.)

1917 - Omar Khayyam became the first imported horse to win the Kentucky Derby.

1950 - The American Bowling Congress abolished its white males-only membership restriction after 34 years.

1955 - Sam Jones (Chicago Cubs) became the first black to pitch a no-hitter. The game was against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

1956 - Carl Erskine of the Brooklyn Dodgers throws the second no-hitter of his career in a 3-0 win over the New York Giants.

1966 - Busch Stadium opens in St. Louis, with the Cardinals defeating the Atlanta Braves 4-3 in 12 innings in the inaugural game.

1970 - Ernie Banks of the Chicago Cubs hits his 500th career home run.

1972 - The Milwaukee Brewers beat the Minnesota Twins, 4-3, in 22 innings. The game was actually completed on May 13.

1973 - The Indiana Pacers defeat the Kentucky Colonels in seven games to win the ABA championship.

1974 - The Boston Celtics defeat the Milwaukee Bucks in seven games to win the NBA championship.

1979 - Chris Evert's 125-match tennis winning streak on clay comes to an end.

1982 - The United States Football League is formed. The charter teams were: Boston Breakers, New Jersey Generals, Philadelphia Stars, Washington Federals, Michigan Panthers, Chicago Blitz, Tampa Bay Bandits, Birmingham Stallions, Oakland Invaders, Los Angeles Express, Denver Gold and the Arizona Wranglers.

1985 - The New York Knicks won the inaugural NBA Draft Lottery.

1997 - Larry Bird was named head coach of the Indiana Pacers.

1998 - Indiana Pacers head coach Larry Bird became only the third rookie head coach to win NBA Coach of the Year honors.

1998 - St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony LaRussa recorded his 1,500th career victory.

2004 - At Dodger Stadium, Alex Cora of Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim hits foul off 14 consecutive pitches, then hits the 18th thrown for a two-run home run.
