1707 - The Kingdom of Great Britain was created as a treaty merging England and Scotland took effect.

1786 - Mozart's opera "The Marriage of Figaro" premiered in Vienna.

1866 - Three days of race-related rioting erupted in Memphis, Tennessee as white mobs targeted blacks, 46 of whom were killed, along with two whites. (The violence spurred the passage of the 14th Amendment defining American citizenship and equal protection under the law.)

1915 - During World War I, a German submarine torpedoed and severely damaged the SS Gulflight, an American tanker near Britain's Scilly Isles, even though the United States was still neutral in the conflict.

1931 - The Empire State Building opened in New York City. At 102 stories, it would be the world's tallest building for the next 41 years.

1941 - The Orson Welles film "Citizen Kane" premiered in New York.

1945 - A day after Adolf Hitler took his own life, Admiral Karl Doenitz effectively became sole leader of the Third Reich with the suicide of Hitler's propaganda minister Josef Goebbels.

1948 - The People's Democratic Republic of Korea (North Korea) was proclaimed.

1960 - The Soviet Union shot down an American U-2 reconnaissance plane near Sverdiovsk and captured its pilot, Francis Gary Powers.

1992 - On the third day of the Los Angeles riots, Rodney King appeared in public to appeal for calm, asking, "Can we all get along?"

2003 - President George W. Bush landed in a jet on the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln off the California coast and, in a speech to the nation, declared major combat in Iraq over.

2011 - Pope Benedict XVI beatified Pope John Paul II, moving his predecessor a step closer to sainthood.

2011 - President Barack Obama announced that Osama bin Laden, the mastermind of the September 11th terrorist attacks, was killed by U.S. forces in Pakistan.

1906 - John Lush of the Philadelphia Phillies no-hits the Brooklyn Dodgers.

1920 - The Brooklyn Dodgers and Boston Braves play to a 1-1 tie after 26 innings.

1922 - Charlie Robertson (Chicago White Sox) pitched a perfect no-hit, no-run game against the Detroit Tigers. The Sox won 3-0. Another perfect game did not come along until 46 years later.

1923 - Zev wins the Kentucky Derby.

1926 - Satchel Paige makes his pitching debut in the U.S. Negro Southern League.

1940 - The 1940 Summer Olympic Games are canceled due to World War II.

1943 - Count Fleet wins the Kentucky Derby.

1948 - Citation wins the Kentucky Derby.

1954 - Determine wins the Kentucky Derby.

2002 - Trevor Hoffman of the San Diego Padres establishes a new major league record for the most saves for one team: 321.

2004 - Barry Bonds of the San Francisco Giants sets a major league record by being walked intentionally four times in a single nine-inning game.
