1790 - John Tyler, the 10th president of the United States, was born in Charles City County, Virginia.

1848 - For the first time in recorded history, Niagara Falls stopped flowing. An ice jam in the Niagara River above the rim of the falls caused the water to stop.

1867 - The North America Act was passed by the British Parliament, creating the dominion of Canada.

1882 - The Knights of Columbus was chartered in Connecticut.

1951 - Julius and Ethel Rosenberg were convicted of conspiracy to commit espionage for passing nuclear secrets to the Soviet Union and were sentenced to death.

1962 - Jack Paar hosted NBC's "Tonight Show" for the final time.

1971 - Army Lt. William L. Calley Jr. was convicted of murdering at least 22 Vietnamese civilians in the My Lai massacre. (He spent three years under house arrest.)

1971 - A jury in Los Angeles recommended the death penalty for Charles Manson and three female followers for the 1969 Tate-La Bianca murders. (The sentences were later commuted.)

1973 - The last U.S. troops left South Vietnam, ending America's direct military involvement in the Vietnam War.

1992 - Democratic presidential nominee Bill Clinton acknowledged experimenting with marijuana "a time or two" while attending Oxford University, adding, "I didn't inhale and I didn't try it again."

1999 - The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed above 10,000 for the first time.

2002 - Israel declared Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat an enemy and sent tanks and armored personnel carriers to fully isolate him in his headquarters in the West Bank town of Ramallah.

2006 - Hamas formally took over the Palestinian government.

1867 - Legendary pitcher Cy Young was born in Gilmore, Ohio.

1929 - The first Stanley Cup final between two American teams took place with the Boston Bruins facing the New York Rangers.

1942 - Stanford defeated Dartmouth 53-38 to win the NCAA Tournament.

1944 - Utah defeated Dartmouth 44-42 to win the NCAA Tournament.

1950 - CCNY (City College of New York) defeated Bradley 71-68 to win the NCAA Tournament and became the first team to win both the NCAA and NIT tournaments in the same year. CCNY beat Bradley 69-61 in the NIT championship game on March 18.

1977 - Marquette defeated North Carolina 67-59 to win the NCAA Tournament.

1982 - Louisiana Tech defeated Cheyney State 76-62 to win the first-ever NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament.

1982 - Michael Jordan's jump shot with 16 seconds remaining gave North Carolina a 63-62 win over Georgetown to win the NCAA championship.

1984 - Baltimore Colts owner Robert Irsay, in the middle of the night, had 15 moving vans loaded up with team equipment and records as he moved the franchise to Indianapolis.

1987 - WrestleMania III was held at the Silverdome in Pontiac, Michigan. Over 93,000 fans witnessed the main event which saw Hulk Hogan bodyslam Andre the Giant to win the WWF Championship.

1998 - Tennessee women's basketball team set an NCAA record with a perfect 39-0 season after defeating Louisiana Tech in the national championship game.

1998 - WrestleMania XIV was held in Boston. The main event saw Stone Cold Steve Austin defeat Shawn Michaels for the WWF Championship with boxer Mike Tyson as the special "outside enforcer" for the match.

1999 - Connecticut upset Duke 77-74 to win the NCAA Tournament.

1999 - Wayne Gretzky of the New York Rangers scored the last of his NHL record 894 goals in a home game against the New York Islanders.

2011 - Longtime Fiesta Bowl president and CEO John Junker was fired following a lengthy and wide-ranging investigation that uncovered, among other things, a scheme to reimburse improper political campaign contributions.
