1513 - Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de Leon landed in present-day Florida.

1625 - Charles I ascended the English throne upon the death of James I.

1794 - President George Washington and Congress authorized the creation of the U.S. Navy.

1836 - The first Mormon temple was dedicated, in Kirtland, Ohio.

1866 - President Andrew Johnson vetoed a civil rights bill which later became the 14th Amendment to the Constitution.

1958 - Nikita Khrushchev became Soviet premier in addition to First Secretary of the Communist Party.

1964 - A 9.2 magnitude earthquake hit 80 miles east of Anchorage, Alaska, killing 117 people and producing a 50-foot tsunami that traveled over 8,000 miles.

1977 - A KLM Boeing 747, attempting to take off, crashed into a Pan Am 747 on the Canary Island of Tenerife, killing 583 people in the deadliest commercial aviation accident in history.

1996 - An Israeli court convicted Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin's confessed assassin of murder, then sentenced former law student Yigal Amir to life in prison.

1998 - The Food and Drug Administration approved the drug Viagra, made by Pfizer, to fight male impotence.

2002 - A suicide bomber killed 30 people during a Passover Seder in Netanya, Israel.

2009 - President Barack Obama launched a fresh effort to defeat al-Qaeda terrorists in both Pakistan and Afghanistan, ordering in 4,000 more troops.

1917 - The Seattle Metropolitans of the Pacific Coast League of Canada, became the first American hockey team to win the Stanley Cup.

1939 - Oregon won the first ever NCAA men's basketball tournament with a 46-33 win over Ohio State in Evanston, Illinois.

1945 - Oklahoma A&M (Oklahoma State) defeated New York University 49-45 to win the NCAA Tournament.

1951 - Kentucky defeated Kansas 68-58 to win the NCAA Tournament.

1971 - UCLA defeated Villanova 68-62 to win the NCAA Tournament for the fifth time.

1972 - Adolph Rupp, who coached the Kentucky men's basketball team for 42 years, announced his retirement.

1978 - Kentucky defeated Duke 94-88 to win the NCAA Tournament.

1982 - Just three wins shy of 300 for his career, right-handed pitcher Gaylord Perry was signed to a one-year contract by the Seattle Mariners.

1988 - Wrestlemania IV was held in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The event was headlined by "Macho Man" Randy Savage defeating the "Million Dollar Man" Ted DiBiase in the finals of a tournament to win the vacated WWF championship.

1989 - Sports Illustrated exposed Pete Rose's gambling activities. The magazine article alleged that baseball's all-time hits leader bet on baseball from the Riverfront Stadium dugout using hand gestures with an associate.

1994 - Magic Johnson was named head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers. He coached the final 16 games of the 1993-94 season.

2007 - NFL owners voted to make instant replay a permanent officiating tool.

2010 - Butler advanced to the Final Four for the first time in school history with a 63-56 win over Kansas State in the West Regional final of the NCAA Tournament.

2011 - Virginia Commonwealth advanced to the Final Four for the first time in school history with a 71-61 win over Kansas.

2012 - The Los Angeles Dodgers were sold to a bidding group that included NBA Hall of Famer Magic Johnson for $2 billion.

2013 - The Miami Heat's 27-game winning streak came to an end with a 101-97 loss to the Chicago Bulls.

2013 - Hall of Fame broadcaster Tim McCarver announced he was leaving his post as lead baseball analyst for Fox after the 2013 season.

2013 - Appalachian State and Georgia Southern universities announced they were each moving from FCS football up to FBS level of competition and would leave the Southern Conference to join the Sun Belt Conference, effective on July 1, 2014.

2014 - The Philadelphia 76ers tied an NBA record with their 26th straight loss.
