1413 - England's King Henry IV died.

1602 - The Dutch East India Company was established. During its 196-year history, it became one of the world's most powerful companies.

1727 - Sir Isaac Newton died in London at age 84.

1815 - Napoleon Bonaparte entered Paris, beginning his Hundred Days rule.

1816 - The Supreme Court affirmed its right to review state court decisions.

1852 - Harriet Beecher Stowe's novel about slavery, "Uncle Tom's Cabin", was published.

1969 - Rock musician John Lennon of the Beatles married Yoko Ono in Gibraltar.

1987 - The Food and Drug Administration approved the sale of AZT, a drug shown to prolong the lives of some AIDS patients.

1990 - Namibia became an independent nation.

1995 - In Tokyo, 12 people were killed and more than 5,500 others sickened when packages containing the poisonous gas sarin were leaked by a doomsday cult on five separate subway trains.

1996 - A jury in Los Angeles convicted Erik and Lyle Menendez of first-degree murder in the shotgun slayings of their millionaire parents. (They are both serving life sentences without parole.)

1997 - Liggett Group settled 22 state lawsuits by admitting the industry markets cigarettes to teenagers and agreeing to warn on every pack that smoking is addictive.

2004 - The U.S. military charged six soldiers with abusing inmates at the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq.

1918 - The Toronto Arenas beat the Vancouver Millionaires to become the first NHL team to compete in the Stanley Cup Finals.

1948 - Michigan defeated Dartmouth to win the first NCAA hockey championship.

1968 - Dave Bing of the Detroit Pistons ended the regular season averaging 27.1 points per game and became the first guard in 20 years to lead the NBA in scoring.

1968 - Wilt Chamberlain of Philadelphia became the first center in NBA history to lead the league in assists with a total of 702, for an average of 8.6 per game.

1973 - Two weeks after dying in a plane crash, Roberto Clemente was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame as the usual five-year waiting period was waived.

1981 - NFL owners adopted a disaster plan for re-stocking a team should a club be involved in a fatal accident.

1985 - Libby Riddles became the first woman to win the Iditarod.

1988 - Mike Tyson defeated Tony Tubbs in the second round to retain his heavyweight boxing championship.

1990 - The Los Angeles Lakers retired Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's #33.

1992 - Kenny Bernstein became the first drag racer to break the 300 mph barrier. He averaged 301.7 mph in a qualifying run at the NHRA's Gatornationals.

1994 - WrestleMania X was held at Madison Square Garden in New York City. The main event saw Bret "The Hitman" Hart defeat Yokozuna for the WWF championship.

2004 - Charles Barkley was inducted into the Phoenix Suns' "Ring of Honor".

2005 - LeBron James of the Cleveland Cavaliers became the youngest, at age 20 years and 80 days, NBA player to score 50 points in a game. His 56-point performance in a 105-98 loss to the Toronto Raptors was also a franchise single-game scoring record.

2006 - Veteran pitcher Al Leiter announced his retirement from baseball after 19 seasons.

2006 - NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue announced his retirement.

2006 - Japan defeated Cuba 10-6 to win the inaugural World Baseball Classic.

2009 - Major League Soccer awarded an expansion franchise to Portland, Oregon.

2010 - Ali Farokhmanesh scored 16 points, including a critical three-pointer in the final minute, and Northern Iowa stunned No. 1 overall seed Kansas, 69-67, in the second round of the Midwest Region of the NCAA Tournament.

2012 - The Denver Broncos announced the signing of quarterback Peyton Manning to a five-year contract.

2013 - Butler, Creighton and Xavier universities were announced as the 8th, 9th, and 10th members of the new Big East Conference.
