1743 - The first recorded town meeting in America was held, at Faneuil Hall in Boston.

1794 - Eli Whitney received a patent for his cotton gin.

1879 - Albert Einstein was born.

1883 - Political philosopher Karl Marx died at age 64.

1900 - Congress ratified the Gold Standard Act.

1939 - The Republic of Czechoslovakia was dissolved, opening the way for Nazi occupation.

1950 - The FBI's "Ten Most Wanted Fugitives" list made its debut.

1951 - United Nations forces recaptured Seoul during the Korean War.

1958 - Perry Como's single "Catch a Falling Star" became the first RIAA gold record.

1964 - A jury in Dallas found Jack Ruby guilty of murdering Lee Harvey Oswald, the accused assassin of President John F. Kennedy.

1967 - President John F. Kennedy's body was moved from a temporary grave to a permanent memorial site at Arlington National Cemetery.

1990 - The Soviet Congress voted Mikhail Gorbachev into the newly-created and powerful position of president.

2004 - Opposition Socialists scored a dramatic upset win in Spain's general election, unseating conservatives stung by charges they'd provoked the Madrid terror bombings by supporting the U.S. led war in Iraq.

2008 - Protests led by Buddhist monks in Tibet turned violent, leading to an extensive crackdown by China's military.

1960 - Philadelphia Warriors rookie Wilt Chamberlain scored a then NBA playoff record 53 points in the Warriors' 132-112 win over Syracuse in the third and deciding game of the Eastern Division semifinals.

1967 - Bubby Smith, a defensive lineman from Michigan State, was the first player chosen in the first combined player draft of the NFL and AFL. Smith was chosen by the Baltimore Colts.

1972 - The Cincinnati Royals of the NBA announced that the team's franchise would be shifted to Kansas City, Missouri at the end of the season.

2004 - WrestleMania XX was held at Madison Square Garden in New York City. The 20th anniversary of the event was headlined by Eddie Guerrero defeating Kurt Angle for the WWE Championship and Chris Benoit defeating Triple H and Shawn Michaels for the World Heavyweight Championship.

2008 - The Houston Rockets won their 21st straight game, the second longest winning streak in NBA history.
