1845 - Andrew Jackson, the seventh president of the United States, died in Nashville at age 78.

1861 - Tennessee became the 11th and final state to secede from the Union.

1864 - President Abraham Lincoln was nominated for a second term at the Republican Party convention in Baltimore.

1867 - Famed architect Frank Lloyd Wright was born.

1915 - Secretary of State William Jennings Bryan resigned in a disagreement over U.S. handling of the sinking of the Lusitania.

1948 - The "Texaco Star Theater" made its debut on NBC with Milton Berle as guest host.

1953 - The Supreme Court ruled that restaurants in the District of Columbia could not refuse to serve blacks.

1968 - Authorities in London announced the capture of James Earl Ray, the suspected assassin of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr.

1982 - President Ronald Reagan became the first American president to address a joint session of Britain's Parliament.

1987 - Fawn Hall, secretary to national security aide Oliver L. North, testified at the Iran-Contra hearings, saying she had helped to shred some documents.

1935 - Omaha became the third horse to win the Triple Crown.

1948 - Nebraska lost to Oklahoma A&M (Oklahoma State) 5-4 in the second game of the NCAA District 5 Baseball Playoff.

1961 - The Milwaukee Braves set a major league record with four consecutive home runs in the seventh inning.

1965 - The Oakland Athletics selected Arizona star Rick Monday with the first pick in the first-ever major league draft for students and sandlot players.

1966 - The National Football League and American Football League agreed to merge into one league of 24 teams with expansion set for 1968. Pete Rozelle was named commissioner.

1968 - Don Drysdale's record scoreless string of 58 2/3 innings came to an end when Tony Taylor of the Philadelphia Phillies scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Howie Bedell.

1969 - The New York Yankees retired Mickey Mantle's No. 7 during "Mickey Mantle Day" at Yankee Stadium.

1983 - Negro Baseball League great Satchel Paige died.

1986 - The Boston Celtics won their 16th NBA championship, defeating the Houston Rockets in the NBA Finals.

1996 - LSU defeated Miami (FL) 9-8 to win the 50th College World Series in Omaha.

2000 - The Dallas Stars and New Jersey Devils played the longest scoreless game in Stanley Cup Finals history. The fifth game of the series lasted 106 minutes and 21 seconds. The Stars won 1-0.

2001 - Nebraska made its first ever appearance in the College World Series. The Huskers dropped their opening game to Cal State-Fullerton 5-4.

2002 - Serena Williams defeated her sister Venus Williams in straight sets to win the French Open for the first time.

2002 - Nebraska lost to Richmond 6-2 in the second game of the Lincoln Super Regional to force a deciding game three.

2002 - Lennox Lewis defeated Mike Tyson with an eighth round knockout to retain the WBC and IBF heavyweight titles.
