1799 - American politician and orator Patrick Henry died at Red Hill Plantation in Virginia.

1816 - A snowstorm struck the northeastern United States, heralding what would become known as the "Year Without a Summer".

1844 - The Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) was founded in London.

1925 - Walter Percy Chrysler founded the Chrysler Corp.

1933 - The first drive-in movie theater opened, in Camden County, New Jersey.

1934 - The Securities and Exchange Commission was established to protect investors and maintain the integrity of the securities markets.

1944 - The D-Day invasion of Europe took place during World War II as Allied forces stormed the beaches of Normandy, France.

2002 - President George W. Bush proposed a new Cabinet department: the Department of Homeland Security.

2004 - Phylicia Rashad became the first African-American actress to win a Tony Award for a leading dramatic role for her work in a revival of "A Raisin in the Sun".

2011 - After days of denials, Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-New York), confessed he had tweeted a lewd photo of himself to a woman and admitted to "inappropriate" exchanges with six other women.

1937 - The Philadelphia Phillies, trailing 8-2 to the St. Louis Cardinals, forfeit the game.

1939 - The New York Giants hit five home runs in the fourth inning in a 17-3 win over the Cincinnati Reds.

1939 - The first Little League baseball game was played as Lundy Lumber defeated Lycoming Dairy 23-8 in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.

1965 - Tom Tresh of the New York Yankees hit home runs on three consecutive at-bats against the Chicago White Sox.

1976 - The Boston Celtics defeat the Phoenix Suns in six games for the NBA championship.

1979 - Willie Horton becomes the 43rd player in major league history to hit 300 home runs.

1989 - Wayne Gretzky of the Los Angeles Kings won the Hart Trophy for the ninth time. He was the first player in NHL history to win the same award nine times.

1992 - Eddie Murray passed Mickey Mantle on the all-time switch-hitter RBI list with 1,510.

1996 - Peter Forsberg (Colorado Avalanche) scored a first period hat-trick against the Florida Panthers in Game Two of the Stanley Cup Finals. He became only the third player in NHL history to score a first-period hat-trick in the Cup Final. He was also the sixth player to score a hat-trick in the Cup Final game.

1996 - Baseball's executive council told Marge Schott, owner of the Cincinnati Reds, to give up day-to-day operations within a week or face a suspension of more than a year. Schott had caused controversy with comments she made concerning Adolph Hitler in an ESPN interview.

2006 - On the sixth day of the sixth month of the sixth year of the century, the Los Angeles Dodgers score six runs in the sixth inning during the sixth game of the current homestand.

2007 - The Anaheim Mighty Ducks defeat the Ottawa Senators in five games to win the Stanley Cup.

2007 - San Diego Padres pitcher Trevor Hoffman becomes the first reliever to save 500 games.

2010 - Rafael Nadal defeats Robin Soderling to win the French Open for the fifth time.
