1723 - Economist Adam Smith was born in Scotland.

1884 - Civil War hero Gen. William T. Sherman refused the Republican nomination for president with the words, "I will not accept if nominated and will not serve if elected."

1933 - The United States went off the gold standard.

1947 - Secretary of State George C. Marshall, speaking at Harvard University, outlined an aid program for Europe that came to be known as the Marshall Plan.

1967 - War erupted in the Middle East as Israel raided Egyptian military targets. Syria, Jordan and Iraq then entered the conflict.

1968 - Sen. Robert F. Kennedy was shot and mortally wounded just after claiming victory in California's Democratic presidential primary. Gunman Sirhan Bishara Sirhan was immediately arrested.

1981 - The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that five homosexuals in Los Angeles had come down with a rare kind of pneumonia; they were the first recognized cases of what became known as AIDS.

2002 - Elizabeth Smart, age 14, was kidnapped from her bedroom in her family's Salt Lake City, Utah home. (She was rescued in March 2003.)

2004 - Ronald Reagan, the 40th president of the United States, died in Los Angeles at age 93 after a long struggle with Alzheimer's disease.

2007 - Vice President Dick Cheney's former chief of staff, I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby was sentenced to 2.5 years in prison for lying and obstructing the CIA leak investigation. (President George W. Bush later commuted the prison sentence.

2013 - The British newspaper the Guardian published the first of many stories based on leaks by Edward Snowden about the top-secret surveillance activities of the National Security Agency.

1925 - Willie McFarlane beat Bobby Jones by one stroke to win the U.S. Open.

1937 - War Admiral won horse racing's Triple Crown.

1943 - Count Fleet won the Triple Crown.

1948 - Philadelphia Phillies centerfielder Richie Ashburn tied a rookie record by hitting in his 23rd consecutive game.

1967 - The NHL awarded six new franchises: the Minnesota North Stars (now Dallas Stars), Oakland Seals, Los Angeles Kings, Pittsburgh Penguins, Philadelphia Flyers and the St. Louis Blues.

1977 - The Portland Trailblazers defeated the Philadelphia 76ers in six games to win the NBA championship.

1989 - The SkyDome opened in Toronto.

1993 - Julie Krone became the first female jockey to win a Triple Crown race when she guided Colonial Affair to a win at the Belmont Stakes.

2005 - Nebraska defeated Creighton 10-2 to win the Lincoln Regional.

2008 - Chipper Jones of the Atlanta Braves hit his 400th career home run.

2011 - Rafael Nadal won the French Open for the sixth time in his career.
