1884 - Civil War hero Gen. William T. Sherman refused the Republican nomination for president with the words, "I will not accept if nominated and will not serve if elected."

1947 - Secretary of State George C. Marshall, speaking at Harvard University, outlined a program for Europe to recover financially from World War II that came to be known as the Marshall Plan.

1977 - The Portland Trailblazers defeat the Philadelphia 76ers in six games to win the NBA championship.
2001 - With a home run in just the 57th game of the season, Barry Bonds of the San Francisco Giants becomes the fastest to reach 30 home runs for a season.
2002 - Barry Bonds moves past Frank Robinson into fourth place on the all-time home run list with 587.
2005 - Nebraska defeated Creighton 10-2 to win the Lincoln Regional.
2006 - Ken Griffey Jr. of the Cincinnati Reds ties Fred McGriff's major league record with a home run in 43 different major league ball parks.
