1844 - Mormon leader Joseph Smith and his brother, Hyrum, were killed by a mob in Carthage, Illinois.

1880 - Helen Keller, the blind and deaf American woman who became an accomplished writer and humanitarian, was born.

1893 - The New York stock market crashed.

1898 - Joshua Slocum became the first person to successfully circumnavigate the earth alone when he landed his sloop Spray in Newport, Rhode Island, a 46,000-mile trip.

1922 - The Newberry Medal for children's literature was first awarded.

1944 - American forces completed their capture of the French port of Cherbourg from the Germans three weeks after D-Day.

1950 - President Harry S. Truman ordered the Air Force and Navy into the Korean War following a call from the United Nations Security Council for member nations to help South Korea repel an invasion from the North.

1954 - The world's first nuclear power plant opened at Obninsk, near Moscow.

1957 - More than 500 people were killed when Hurricane Audrey slammed through coastal Louisiana and Texas.

1969 - Patrons at the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar in New York City's Greenwich Village, clashed with police in an incident considered to be the birth of the gay rights movement.

1972 - The video game company Atari was founded by Nolan Bushnell and Ted Dabney in Santa Clara, California.

1977 - Joseph Ratzinger, the future Pope Benedict XVI, was named a cardinal by Pope Paul VI.

1980 - President Jimmy Carter signed legislation reviving draft registration.

1985 - Route 66, which originally stretched from Chicago to Santa Monica, California, passed into history as officials decertified the road, a victim of the Interstate Highway System.

1991 - Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall, the first black jurist to sit on the nation's highest court, announced his retirement. (His departure led to the contentious nomination of Clarence Thomas to succeed him.)

2003 - The national Do-Not-Call Registry, formed to combat unwanted telemarketing calls and administered by the Federal Trade Commission, enrolled almost 750,000 phone numbers on its first day.

2005 - BTK serial killer Dennis Rader pleaded guilty to 10 murders that spread fear across Wichita, Kansas, beginning in the 1970s. (He later received multiple life sentences.)

2007 - Gordon Brown became British prime minister, succeeding Tony Blair.

2011 - Former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich was convicted by a federal jury in Chicago of corruption. (He was later sentenced to 14 years in prison.)

1876 - Dave Force (Philadelphia Athletics) became the first National League player to get six hits in a nine inning game.

1939 - The Brooklyn Dodgers and Boston Bees play to a 2-2 tie after 23 innings.

1958 - Billy Pierce's bid for a perfect game is broken up with two outs in the 9th inning.

1972 - Bobby Hull signed a 10-year hockey contract for $2,500,000. He became a player and coach of the Winnipeg Jets of the World Hockey Association.

1982 - The Atlanta Braves tie a major league record by recording seven double plays in a 2-0 win over the Cincinnati Reds.

1984 - The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in NCAA v. Board of Regents of the University of Oklahoma, that the NCAA's television plan (monopoly) violated the Sherman and Clayton Antitrust Acts.

1986 - Robby Thompson (San Francisco) was caught stealing bases a record four times in one game.

1988 - Mike Tyson knocks out Michael Spink in 91 seconds in their heavyweight title fight in Atlantic City.

1990 - Jose Canseco signs a record contract with the Oakland Athletics that pays him $4.7 million per year.

2004 - The Boston Red Sox scored 10 runs before making an out against the Florida Marlins. The final score was 25-8.
