1932 - Jack Sharkey won a 15-round split decision over Max Schmeling to win the heavyweight championship.

1965 - Gary Player became just the third man to win all four of golf's majors after taking the U.S. Open.

1967 - Boxer Muhammad Ali was convicted in Houston of violating Selective Service laws by refusing to be drafted. The conviction was later overturned by the Supreme Court.

1970 - Brazil won its third straight World Cup.

1970 - Cesar Guiterrez of the Detroit Tigers became the first modern day major leaguer to record seven hits in a game.

1970 - Tony Jacklin became the first English golfer to win the U.S. Open in 50 years.

1971 - Lee Trevino edged out Jack Nicklaus in a playoff for the U.S. Open title.

1986 - Heisman Trophy winning running back Bo Jackson snubbed the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and signed to play baseball with the Kansas City Royals.

1988 - The Los Angeles Lakers became the NBA's first repeat world champions since Boston in 1969 after defeating the Detroit Pistons in the NBA Finals.

1992 - Tom Kite won the U.S. Open.

1993 - The Chicago Bulls defeated the Phoenix Suns to win their third straight NBA championship.

1994 - Steffi Graf became the first defending Wimbledon champion to lose in the first round, falling to Lori McNeil.

1998 - Marion Jones became the first athlete in 50 years to win the women's 100 meters, 200 meters and long jump at the USA Track & Field Championships.

1999 - Lawrence Phillips became the first NFL Europe player to rush for more than 1,000 yards in a season.

2002 - Germany defeated the United States 1-0 in a quarterfinal match of the World Cup.

2004 - Ken Griffey Jr. of the Cincinnati Reds hit his 500th home run.

2007 - Sammy Sosa of the Texas Rangers became the fifth player in baseball history to hit 600 home runs.

2012 - The Miami Heat defeated the Oklahoma City Thunder in five games to win the NBA championship.
