1586 - English colonists sailed from Roanoke Island, North Carolina, after failing to establish England's first permanent settlement in America.

1862 - Slavery was outlawed in U.S. territories.

1865 - Gen. Gordon Granger informed the citizens of Galveston, Texas that the slaves were freed. The celebration of the day became known as Juneteenth.

1910 - Father's Day was celebrated for the first time, in Spokane, Washington.

1917 - During World War I, King George V changed the British royal family's German-sounding surname, Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, to Windsor.

1934 - The Federal Communications Commission was established.

1953 - Julius Rosenberg, 35, and his wife, Ethel, 37, convicted of conspiring to pass U.S. atomic secrets to the Soviet Union, were executed at Sing Sing Prison in Ossining, New York.

1961 - The Supreme Court struck down a provision in Maryland's constitution requiring state officeholders to profess a belief in God.

1964 - The Civil Rights Act of 1964 was approved after surviving an 83-day filibuster in the Senate.

1972 - Hurricane Agnes, blamed for at least 122 deaths, made landfall over the Florida Panhandle.

1977 - Pope Paul VI proclaimed John Neumann the first male saint from the United States.

1987 - The Supreme Court struck down a Louisiana law requiring any public school teaching the theory of evolution to teach creation science as well.

1999 - Britain's Prince Edward married commoner Sophie Rhys-Jones in Windsor, England.

2000 - The Supreme Court, in a 6-3 ruling, barred officials from letting students lead stadium crowds in prayer before football games.

2007 - A truck bomb struck a Shiite mosque in central Baghdad, killing at least 87 people.

1846 - In Hoboken, New Jersey, USA, the first baseball game under recognizable modern rules is played (Cartwright Rules); New York Nines defeated the New York Knickerbockers 23-1.

1867 - Horse racing's Belmont Stakes was run for the first time.

1903 - Baseball great Lou Gehrig was born.

1938 - Italy defeated Hungary 4-1 to win the World Cup in Paris.

1942 - Paul Waner of the Boston Braves records his 3,000th hit.

1943 - The NFL's Philadelphia Eagles and Pittsburgh Steelers merge to form the Steagles. (The merger dissolved on December 5.)

1972 - The Supreme Court rules that the anti-trust exemption that major league baseball uses was constitutional. The court then called upon Congress to look into repealing the sport's special status.

1973 - Gordie Howe left the NHL to play alongside his sons Mark and Marty in the World Hockey Association (WHA).

1985 - Reggie Jackson cracks the Top 10 career home run list with his 513th.

1986 - University of Maryland basketball star Len Bias, the first draft pick of the Boston Celtics, suffered a fatal cocaine-induced seizure.

1999 - The Dallas Stars defeat the Buffalo Sabres in six games to win the Stanley Cup.

2000 - The Los Angeles Lakers defeat the Indiana Pacers in six games to win the NBA Finals.

2005 - Florida defeated Nebraska 7-4 in the winner's bracket of the College World Series.

2006 - The Carolina Hurricanes defeat the Edmonton Oilers in seven games to win the Stanley Cup.
