1215 - King John sealed the Magna Carta.

1775 - George Washington was appointed head of the Continental Army.

1836 - Arkansas became the 25th state.

1844 - Charles Goodyear received a patent for a process to strengthen rubber.

1849 - James K. Polk, the 11th president of the United States, died in Nashville, Tennessee at age 53.

1864 - Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton signed an order establishing a military burial ground, which would become Arlington National Cemetery.

1902 - The 20th Century Limited, an express passenger train between New York and Chicago, went into service.

1904 - More than 1,000 people died when fire erupted aboard the steamboat General Slocum in New York City's East River.

1969 - The variety show "Hee Haw" premiered on CBS.

1978 - King Hussein of Jordan married 26-year-old American Lisa Halaby, who became Queen Noor.

1938 - Johnny Vander Meer became the first pitcher in major league history to record back-to-back no-hit, no-run games, beating the Dodgers 6-0 at Ebbets Field.

1952 - Julius Boros won the U.S. Open.

1957 - Dick Mayer won the U.S. Open.

1963 - Juan Marichal of the San Francisco Giants no-hit the Houston Colt .45s.

2003 - Jim Furyk won his first major championship by winning the 103rd U.S. Open.

2004 - The Detroit Pistons defeated the Los Angeles Lakers to win the NBA championship.

2006 - NBA legend Michael Jordan became part owner of the Charlotte Bobcats.

2011 - The Boston Bruins defeated the Vancouver Canucks in seven games to win the Stanley Cup for the first time since 1972.

2014 - Martin Kaymer won the U.S. Open.
