1215 - King John sealed the Magna Carta.

1520 - Pope Leo X issued a papal bull in which he threatened to excommunicate Martin Luther if he did not recant his religious beliefs, a threat that was carried out the following January.

1775 - George Washington was appointed head of the Continental Army by the Second Continental Congress.

1836 - Arkansas became the 25th state.

1844 - Charles Goodyear was granted a patent for rubber vulcanization.

1849 - James K. Polk, the 11th president of the United States, died in Nashville, Tennessee at age 53.

1864 - Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton signed an order establishing a military burial ground, which would become Arlington National Cemetery.

1902 - The 20th Century Limited, an express passenger train between New York and Chicago, began service.

1904 - More than 1,000 people died when fire erupted aboard the steamboat General Slocum in New York City's East River.

1934 - President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed an act making the National Guard part of the U.S. Army in the event of war or national emergency.

1991 - Mount Pinatubo in the northern Philippines exploded in one of the biggest volcanic eruptions of the 20th century, killing about 800 people.

1992 - Vice President Dan Quayle erroneously instructed a Trenton, N.J., elementary school student to spell potato as "potatoe" during a spelling bee.

1994 - Israel and the Vatican established full diplomatic relations.

1995 - During his murder trial, O.J. Simpson struggled to don a pair of gloves that prosecutors said were worn by the killer of Simpson's ex-wife, Nicole, and her friend, Ronald Goldman.

1996 - Singer Ella Fitzgerald died at age 78.

2002 - Rolling Stone member Mick Jagger was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II.

2003 - A jury in Houston convicted accounting firm Arthur Andersen of obstruction of justice.

2006 - A divided Supreme Court made it easier for police to barge into homes and seize evidence without knocking or waiting.

2006 - Microsoft Corp. Chairman Bill Gates said he would transition from day-to-day responsibilities at the company to concentrate on the charitable work of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

2007 - Bob Barker ended his 35-year run as host of the CBS game show "The Price is Right".

1923 - Lou Gehrig made his major league debut with the New York Yankees.

1938 - Johnny Vander Meer (Cincinnati Reds) pitched his second straight no-hitter.

1963 - Juan Marichal (San Francisco) threw a no-hitter. It was the first Giants no-hitter since Carl Hubbell in 1929.

1980 - Jorge Orta of Cleveland Indians gets six hits in a baseball game.

1980 - Jack Nicklaus won his fourth U.S. Open title.

1993 - Ken Griffey Jr. hit his 100th career home run making him the sixth youngest to reach 100.

2001 - The Los Angeles Lakers defeat the Philadelphia 76ers in five games to win a second straight NBA championship. The Lakers also set a new NBA record for best playoff record with a 15-1 mark.

2003 - The San Antonio Spurs defeated the New Jersey Nets in six games to win the NBA championship.

2004 - The Detroit Pistons upset the heavily-favored Los Angeles Lakers in five games to win the NBA championship.

2005 - The New York Yankees announced plans for a new $800 million stadium. The plans called for the building to be next to Yankee Stadium and be ready by the 2009 season.
