1900 - The Boxer Rebellion began in China.

1942 - A four-man Nazi sabotage team arrived on Long Island, New York, three days before a second four-man team landed in Florida. (All eight men were arrested after two members of the first team defected.)

1942 - President Franklin D. Roosevelt created the Office of Strategic Services and the Office of War Information.

1966 - The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in Miranda v. Arizona that police must advise suspects of their rights, including their constitutional right to consult with an attorney and to remain silent, before taking them into custody.

1967 - Thurgood Marshall was nominated to become the first African American on the U.S. Supreme Court by President Lyndon B. Johnson.

1971 - The New York Times began publishing the "Pentagon Papers," a secret study of America's involvement in Vietnam from 1945 to 1967 that had been leaked to the paper by military analyst Daniel Ellsberg.

1977 - James Earl Ray, the convicted assassin of Martin Luther King Jr., was recaptured after his escape three days earlier from a Tennessee prison.

1981 - A scare occurred during a parade in London when a teenager fired six blank shots at Queen Elizabeth II.

1983 - The U.S. space probe Pioneer 10, launched in 1972, became the first man-made spacecraft to leave the solar system.

1996 - The 81-day-old Freemen standoff ended as 16 remaining members of the anti-government group surrendered to the FBI and left their Montana ranch.

1997 - A jury voted unanimously to give Timothy McVeigh the death penalty for his role in the Oklahoma City bombing.

2000 - The first meeting between President Kim Jong Il of North Korea and President Kim Dae Jung of South Korea occurred.

2005 - A jury in Santa Maria, California, acquitted Michael Jackson of molesting a 13-year-old cancer survivor at his Neverland ranch.

2012 - Federal prosecutors dropped all charges against former Democratic vice presidential candidate John Edwards after his corruption trial ended the previous month in a deadlocked jury.

2013 - The White House said it had conclusive evidence that Syrian President Bashar Assad’s regime had used chemical weapons against opposition forces seeking to overthrow the government.

2020 - Atlanta’s police chief resigned, hours after the fatal police shooting of Rayshard Brooks; protests over the shooting grew turbulent, and the Wendy’s restaurant at the scene of the shooting was gutted by flames.

2022 - The committee investigating the Capitol attack was told that Donald Trump’s closest campaign advisers, top government officials and even his family were dismantling his false claims of 2020 election fraud ahead of Jan. 6, but the defeated president was becoming “detached from reality” and clinging to outlandish theories to stay in power.

2023 - Donald Trump became the first former president to face a judge on federal charges as he pleaded not guilty in a Miami courtroom to dozens of felony counts that he hoarded classified documents and refused government demands to give them back.

1935 - James J. Braddock, a 10-to-1 underdog, upsets heavyweight champion Max Baer in a 15-round unanimous points decision at Madison Square Garden for the title.

1948 - Babe Ruth made his final public appearance at Yankee Stadium where the team retired his #3.

1978 - The NHL Board of Governors approved the merger of the Cleveland Barons and the Minnesota North Stars.

1989 - The Detroit Pistons sweep the Los Angeles Lakers to win the NBA championship.

1991 - During the first round of the U.S. Open golf tournament, a spectator was killed by a lightning strike.

1994 - Chicago Cubs second baseman Ryne Sandberg announces his retirement due to poor play and forfeits $15.7 million of his $25 million contract.

1995 - The New Jersey Devils defeat the Philadelphia Flyers to win their first Stanley Cup.

1997 - The Chicago Bulls won their fifth NBA championship in seven years after defeating the Utah Jazz in six games.

2002 - The Detroit Red Wings win their 10th Stanley Cup after defeating the Carolina Hurricanes.

2012 - Matt Cain of the San Francisco Giants throws a perfect game against the Houston Astros.

2014 - The Los Angeles Kings defeat the New York Rangers to win the Stanley Cup.

2017 - The Golden State Warriors defeat the Cleveland Cavaliers to win the NBA championship.

2019 - The Toronto Raptors defeat the Golden State Warriors to win their first NBA championship.

2023 - The Vegas Golden Knights defeat the Florida Panthers to win their first Stanley Cup.
