1509 - England's King Henry VIII married his first wife, Catherine of Aragon.

1770 - Capt. James Cook discovered the Great Barrier Reef off the coast of Australia.

1942 - The United States and the Soviet Union signed a lend-lease agreement to aid the Soviet war effort in World War II.

1963 - Gov. George Wallace confronted federal troops at the University of Alabama in an effort to defy a federal court order to allow two black students to enroll at the school.

1963 - Buddhist monk Quang Duc immolated himself on a Saigon street to protest the government of South Vietnamese President Ngo Dinh Diem.

1987 - British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher won a third consecutive term in office.

1990 - The Supreme Court struck down a federal law prohibiting desecration of the American flag.

1993 - The Supreme Court ruled that people who commit "hate crimes" motivated by bigotry may be sentenced to extra punishment.

2001 - Timothy McVeigh was executed by lethal injection for the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing that killed 168 people.

2002 - Rock musician Paul McCartney married Heather Mills in a remote Irish castle. (The couple divorced in 2008.)

2009 - The World Health Organization declared the swine flu outbreak a pandemic.

1913 - Football coach Vince Lombardi was born in New York City.

1919 - Walter Hagen won the U.S. Open.

1919 - Sir Barton became horse racing's first Triple Crown winner after capturing the Belmont Stakes.

1938 - Johnny Vander Meer of the Cincinnati Reds threw the first of two consecutive no-hitters.

1950 - Ben Hogan won the U.S. Open.

1972 - Hank Aaron tied the National League record with his 14th career grand slam.

1974 - The Kansas City Scouts and the Washington Capitals officially received their NHL franchises. The Scouts moved to Denver before the start of the 1976-77 season to become the Colorado Rockies and then later the New Jersey Devils.

1977 - Seattle Slew became horse racing's 10th Triple Crown winner and the first winner with an undefeated racing record, having won all nine races entered up to this point.

1984 - The Boston Celtics won their 15th NBA championship after defeating the Los Angeles Lakers in seven games in the NBA Finals.

1988 - Stanford became the first team in 14 years to win back-to-back national championships as the Cardinal defeated Arizona State 9-4 to win the College World Series.

1990 - Nolan Ryan of the Texas Rangers threw the sixth no-hitter of his career in a 5-0 win over the Oakland A's. Ryan also became the first player to throw a no-hitter for three different teams and the oldest player in major league history to throw a no-hitter at the age of 43.

2003 - The NBA announced the new franchise in Charlotte, North Carolina would be called the Bobcats.

2003 - The Houston Astros recorded the first combined no-hitter using six different pitchers in major league history in an 8-0 win over the New York Yankees.

2005 - The Amsterdam Admirals won their first NFL Europe title, defeating the Berlin Thunder 27-21 in World Bowl XIII.

2005 - Nebraska defeated Miami (FL) 6-3 to win the Lincoln Super Regional and advance to the College World Series for the third time in program history.

2006 - The Chicago Rush won ArenaBowl XX with a 69-61 win over the Orlando Predators.

2006 - Asafa Powell of Jamaica tied American Justin Gatlin's world record in the 100 meter dash with a clocking of 9.77 seconds.

2009 - The NCAA placed the University of Alabama athletic program on three years probation and forced the football team to vacate a number of wins from 2005 to 2007 as a result of widespread textbook distribution violations.

2010 - Boise State University accepted an invitation to join the Mountain West Conference, beginning in the 2011-12 season.

2010 - The University of Nebraska announced it was leaving the Big 12 Conference and accepted an invitation to join the Big Ten Conference, beginning in the 2011-12 season.

2010 - The FIFA World Cup opened in South Africa, the first time soccer's biggest tournament was held on the African continent.

2010 - ESPN launched the ESPN 3D television channel.

2012 - Rafael Nadal won his record seventh French Open title, defeating Novak Djokovic.

2012 - The Los Angeles Kings defeated the New Jersey Devils to win the Stanley Cup.
