1776 - The Declaration of Independence was read aloud to Gen. George Washington's troops in New York.

1816 - Argentina declared independence from Spain.

1850 - Zachary Taylor, the 12th president of the United States, died in Washington, D.C. after serving only 16 months in office from illness, most likely cholera. Vice President Millard Fillmore then became the nation's 13th president.

1872 - The doughnut cutter was patented by John F. Blondel of Thomaston, Maine.

1896 - William Jennings Bryan caused a sensation at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago with his "cross of gold" speech denouncing supporters of the gold standard. Bryan went on to win the party's nomination for president.

1900 - The British Parliament proclaimed that as of Jan. 1, 1901, the six Australian colonies would be united as the Commonwealth of Australia.

1974 - Supreme Court Chief Justice Earl Warren died at the age of 83.

1992 - Arkansas governor and Democratic presidential nominee Bill Clinton chose Tennessee Sen. Al Gore as his running mate.

1995 - The rock band the Grateful Dead played their last concert, at Soldier Field in Chicago, after a 30-year run, much of it spent on the road. (Lead guitarist Jerry Garcia died the following month.)

2004 - A Senate Intelligence Committee report concluded the CIA had provided unfounded assessments of the threat posed by Iraq that the Bush administration relied on to justify going to war.

2011 - South Sudan became the world's newest nation and the 54th nation on the African continent, officially breaking away from Sudan after two civil wars over five decades that had cost millions of lives.

1940 - The National League won the All-Star Game 4-0 at Sportsman's Park in St. Louis.

1946 - The American League won the All-Star Game 12-0 at Fenway Park in Boston.

1957 - The American League won the All-Star Game 6-5 at Busch Stadium in St. Louis.

1963 - The National League won the All-Star Game 5-3 at Cleveland Stadium in Cleveland. Willie Mays of the San Francisco Giants was named MVP.

1963 - Stan Musial of the St. Louis Cardinals appeared in a record 24th All-Star Game.

1966 - Jack Nicklaus joined Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan and Gary Player as the only golfers to win all four majors after his victory in the British Open.

1968 - The Philadelphia 76ers traded Wilt Chamberlain to the Los Angeles Lakers for three other players.

1968 - The National League won the All-Star Game 1-0 at the Astrodome in Houston. Willie Mays of the San Francisco Giants was named MVP. This was the first All-Star Game to be played indoors.

1985 - Herschel Walker of the New Jersey Generals was named MVP of the USFL.

1991 - The American League won the All-Star Game 4-2 at the SkyDome in Toronto. Cal Ripken Jr. of the Baltimore Orioles was named MVP.

1996 - The National League won the All-Star Game 6-0 at Veterans Stadium in Philadelphia. Mike Piazza of the Los Angeles Dodgers was named MVP.

1997 - Boxer Mike Tyson was banned from the ring and fined $3 million for biting the ear of Evander Holyfield during their bout.

2000 - Pete Sampras won the singles title at Wimbledon and set a new record with his 13th Grand Slam title.

2002 - The All-Star Game at Miller Park in Milwaukee ended in a 7-7 tie after 11 innings when both teams ran out of pitchers. No MVP award was given.

2006 - Italy defeated France on penalty kicks 5-3 to win their fourth World Cup title.

2006 - Roger Federer defeated Rafael Nadal to win his fourth straight Wimbledon crown.

2011 - Derek Jeter of the New York Yankees became the 28th player in major league history to record 3,000 hits.

2013 - Chris Chelios, Scott Niedermeyer and Brendan Shanahan were elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame.
