1885 - Louis Pasteur successfully treated a patient with a rabies vaccine.

2005 - New York Times reporter Judith Miller was jailed after refusing to testify before a grand jury investigating the leak of an undercover CIA operative's name.

2010 - Queen Elizabeth II addressed the United Nations for the first time since 1957 during her first visit to New York in more than 30 years.

2010 - Actress Lindsay Lohan was sentenced to 90 days in jail and 90 dais in a residential substance-abuse program for violating her probation stemming from two separate 2007 cases of driving under the influence of cocaine and alcohol. (She served 14 days behind bars.)

1935 - Helen Wills Moody wins her seventh Wimbledon championship.

1938 - The National League wins the All-Star Game 4-1 in Cincinnati.

1941 - The New York Yankees unveil a monument to Lou Gehrig in centerfield.

1942 - The American League wins the All-Star Game 3-1 in New York.

1957 - Althea Gibson became the first black player to win a Wimbledon singles title, defeating fellow American Darlene Hard 6-3, 6-2.

1983 - The American League wins the All-Star Game 13-3. In the game, Fred Lynn of the California Angels hits the first grand slam in All-Star Game history.

1985 - Martina Navratilova wins her fourth consecutive Wimbledon title.

1996 - Steffi Graf wins her seventh Wimbledon championship.
