1856 - Playwright George Bernard Shaw was born in Dublin, Ireland.

1908 - The Office of the Chief Examiner, which in 1935 became the Federal Bureau of Investigation, was created.

1945 - Winston Churchill resigned as Britain's Prime Minister after his Conservatives were soundly defeated by the Labor Party. He was succeeded by Clement Attlee.

1947 - President Harry Truman signed the National Security Act, creating the Department of Defense, the National Security Council, the Central Intelligence Agency and the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

1948 - President Harry Truman signed executive orders prohibiting discrimination in the U.S. armed forces and federal employment.

1952 - Argentina's first lady, Eva Peron, died in Buenos Aires at age 33.

1990 - The House of Representatives reprimanded Rep. Barney Frank (D-Massachusetts) for ethics violations.

1990 - President George H.W. Bush signed into law the Americans with Disabilities Act.

1990 - The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that a young woman -- later identified as Kimberly Bergalis of Florida -- had been infected with the AIDS virus, apparently by her dentist.

2000 - A federal judge approved a $1.25 billion settlement between Swiss banks and more than a half million plaintiffs who alleged the banks had hoarded money deposited by Holocaust victims.

2006 - A jury in Houston found Andrea Yates not guilty by reason of insanity in the drowning for her children in a bathtub in the second trial she faced on the charges; she was committed to a state mental hospital.

1948 - Babe Ruth made his final public appearance, attending a New York City premier of the "Babe Ruth Story".

1962 - Warren Spahn set a National League record for most home runs by a pitcher with 31.

1984 - Pete Rose tied Ty Cobb's major league record of 3,052 career singles.

1986 - Mike Tyson took out Marivs Frazier, son of legendary heavyweight champion Joe Frazier, just 30 seconds into the first round. It was the quickest knockout in the history of nationally televised bouts.

1997 - Don Shula, Wellington Mara, Mike Webster and Mike Hayes were elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

1998 - Three spectators were killed and six were injured by flying debris from a one-car crash at the U.S. 500 at Michigan Speedway. They were the first fan deaths at a major race in the United States in more than a decade.

1999 - The San Francisco 49ers signed running back Lawrence Phillips to a multi-year contract.

2005 - Greg Maddux of the Chicago Cubs recorded his 3,000th career strikeout.

2007 - New York Jets running back Curtis Martin announced his retirement from football.

2007 - Wake Forest men's basketball coach Skip Prosser died of an apparent heart attack on campus at the age of 56.

2009 - Rickey Henderson and Jim Rice were inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.

2009 - The United States men's soccer team failed in its quest for a third straight CONCACAF Gold Cup championship, losing to Mexico 5-0.

2010 - Matt Garza tossed the first no-hitter in franchise history for the Tampa Bay Rays in a 5-0 win over the Detroit Tigers.
