1566 - French astrologer, physician and prophet Nostradamus died.

1776 - The Continental Congress passed a resolution that "these United Colonies are, and of right, ought to be, Free and Independent States."

1881 - President James A. Garfield was fatally shot by Charles J. Guiteau at the Washington railroad station. (Garfield died on Sept. 19.)

1890 - Congress passed the Sherman Antitrust Act.

1908 - Thurgood Marshall, the first black member of the U.S. Supreme Court, was born in Baltimore.

1926 - The United States Army Air Corps was created.

1932 - Democrats nominated New York Gov. Franklin D. Roosevelt for president at their convention in Chicago.

1937 - Aviator Amelia Earhart and navigator Fred Noonan disappeared over the Pacific Ocean while attempting to make the first round-the-world flight at the equator.

1947 - An object that the Army Air Force later said was a weather balloon crashed near Roswell, New Mexico. Eyewitness accounts gave rise to speculation that it might have been an alien spacecraft.

1961 - Author Ernest Hemingway, age 61, shot himself to death at his home in Ketchum, Idaho.

1962 - The first Walmart store (called Wal-Mart Discount City) was opened in Rogers, Arkansas by Sam Walton and his brother James.

1964 - President Lyndon B. Johnson signed into law a sweeping civil rights bill.

1976 - The Supreme Court ruled the death penalty was not inherently cruel or unusual.

1996 - Seven years after they murdered their parents in the family's Beverly Hills mansion, Lyle and Erik Menendez were sentenced to life in prison without parole.

1997 - Actor Jimmy Stewart died in Beverly Hills, California.

2002 - Steve Fossett became the first person to circumnavigate the globe solo in a balloon.

2003 - President George W. Bush promised to deal harshly with those who attack American troops in Iraq, saying, "bring them on".

2007 - President George W. Bush commuted the sentence of former aide I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby, sparing him from a two-and-a-half year prison term in the CIA leak case.

1921 - Jack Dempsey knocked out William Carpentier in a heavyweight boxing match that drew the first million dollar gate ($1.7 million).

1927 - Helen Wills Moody is the first American woman to win Wimbledon in 20 years.

1933 - Carl Hubbell shuts out the St. Louis Cardinals 1-0 in 18 innings without a single walk.

1938 - Helen Wills Moody wins her eighth and final Wimbledon women's singles title.

1941 - Joe DiMaggio breaks Willie Keeler's 44-game baseball hitting streak.

1966 - Billie Jean King wins her first career Wimbledon championship.

1978 - Pitcher Ron Guidry sets a New York Yankees team record with a 13-0 start.

1988 - Steffi Graf defeats Martina Navratilova to win the Wimbledon crown.

1994 - Colombian soccer player Andres Escobar was shot to death in Medellin. 10 days earlier he had accidentally scored a goal against his own team in World Cup competition.

1995 - Hideo Nomo became the first Japanese player to be selected for a major league baseball All-Star Game.

1996 - Alex Rodriguez became the third youngest player to be selected to the American League All Star team. Dwight Gooden and Ken Griffey Jr. were the two younger than Rodriguez.

2002 - A record 62 home runs were hit in 16 major league baseball games on this day.

2003 - Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada is selected to host the 2010 Winter Olympic Games.
