64 - A great fire began that ultimately destroyed most of Rome. The emperor Nero blamed it on Christians and began the first Roman persecution of them.

1536 - Parliament passed an act declaring the authority of the pope void in England.

1872 - Britain enacted voting by secret ballot.

1918 - Nelson Mandela, a leading anti-apartheid figure and South Africa's first black president, was born in Mvezo.

1925 - The first volume of Adolf Hitler's "Mein Kampf" was published.

1932 - The United States and Canada signed a treaty to develop the St. Lawrence Seaway.

1936 - The Spanish Civil War began as Gen. Francisco Franco led an uprising of army troops based in North Africa.

1947 - President Harry S. Truman signed the Presidential Succession Act into law, which placed the Speaker of the House and the Senate President Pro Tempore next in line of succession after the vice president.

1969 - A car driven by Sen. Ted Kennedy (D-Massachusetts) plunged off a bridge on Chappaquiddick Island near Martha's Vineyard. His passenger, 28-year-old Mary Jo Kopechne, died.

1984 - Gunman James Huberty opened fire at a McDonald's fast food restaurant in San Ysidro, California, killing 21 people before being shot dead by police.

1984 - Walter F. Mondale won the Democratic presidential nomination in San Francisco.

1986 - The world got its first look at the wreckage of the RMS Titanic resting on the ocean floor as videotape of the British luxury liner, which sank in 1912, was released by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.

1989 - Actress Rebecca Schaeffer, age 21, was shot to death at her Los Angeles home by an obsessed fan. (The killing prompted California in 1990 to pass the nation's first anti-stalking law.)

1998 - A 23-foot tsunami along the coast of Papua New Guinea killed nearly 3,000 people.

2005 - An unrepentant Eric Rudolph was sentenced in Birmingham, Alabama to life in prison for an abortion clinic bombing that killed an off-duty police officer and maimed a nurse.

2011 - Gen. David Petraeus handed over command of American and coalition forces in Afghanistan to Gen. John Allen as he left to take over command of the Central Intelligence Agency.

1913 - After 68 straight innings, New York Giants pitcher Christy Mathewson gives up a walk.

1927 - Ty Cobb recorded his 4,000th hit.

1948 - Pat Seerey of the Chicago White Sox hits four home runs in a game.

1951 - Jersey Joe Walcott knocks out Ezzard Charles in five rounds for heavyweight belt. At age 37 Walcott is the oldest boxer to win the title.

1954 - The St. Louis Cardinals, trailing 8-1 to the Philadelphia Phillies, begin stalling in the 5th inning; they then forfeit the game.

1960 - The National League votes to add new franchises in Houston and New York.

1964 - Pete Rose of the Cincinnati Reds hits the only grand slam of his career.

1970 - Ron Hunt of the San Francisco Giants gets hit by a pitch for a record 119th time.

1970 - Willie Mays records his 3,000th career hit.

1976 - 14-year-old Romanian gymnast Nadia Comaneci earned the first perfect score, a ten, at the Olympic Games in Montreal. She went on to score six more tens and won three gold medals.

1978 - New York Yankees manager Billy Martin suspends Reggie Jackson for not bunting.

1987 - Don Mattingly of the New York Yankees ties a major league record by hitting a home run in his eighth consecutive game.

1994 - Trailing 11-0 after three innings, the Houston Astros pull off a major comeback with a 15-12 win over the St. Louis Cardinals.

1999 - David Cone of the New York Yankees pitched the 14th perfect game in modern major league history in a 6-0 win over the Montreal Expos.

2011 - Japan defeated the United States 3-1 on penalty kicks to win the Women's World Cup.
