1862 - Flag Officer David G. Farragut became the first rear admiral in the United States Navy.

1918 - Russia's Czar Nicholas II, his wife and their five children were executed by the Bolsheviks.

1935 - The nation's first parking meters were installed in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

1945 - The first atomic bomb was detonated in a test in Alamogordo, New Mexico. On the same day, the USS Indianapolis left Mare Island Naval Shipyard in California on a secret mission to deliver atomic bomb components to Tinian Island in the Marianas.

1951 - J.D. Salinger's novel "The Catcher in the Rye" was published.

1957 - Marine Maj. John Glenn set a transcontinental speed record when he flew a jet from California to New York in 3 hours, 23 minutes and 8 seconds.

1964 - In accepting the Republican presidential nomination in San Francisco, Barry M. Goldwater said "extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice" and "moderation in the pursuit of justice is no virtue."

1969 - Apollo 11 blasted off from Cape Kennedy on the first manned mission to the moon.

1973 - Former White House aide Alexander P. Butterfield publicly revealed the existence of President Richard Nixon's secret taping system during the Senate Watergate hearings.

1979 - Saddam Hussein became president of Iraq.

1980 - Ronald Reagan won the Republican presidential nomination at the party's convention in Detroit.

1999 - John F. Kennedy Jr., his wife Carolyn, and her sister died when the single-engine plane Kennedy was piloting plunged into the Atlantic Ocean near Martha's Vineyard in Massachusetts.

2004 - Martha Stewart was sentenced to five months in prison and five months of home confinement by a federal judge for lying about a stock sale.

1909 - The American League's longest scoreless game takes place as the Washington Senators and Detroit Tigers play to a 0-0 tie after 18 innings.

1920 - Babe Ruth sets a new single season home run record with 30. (He would finish the season with 54.)

1941 - Joe DiMaggio increases his hitting streak to 56 consecutive games.

1950 - Uruguay defeats Brazil 2-1 to win the World Cup in Rio de Janeiro. The largest crowd in sporting history of 199,854 were on hand to watch in person. (Some estimates are as many as 205,000 were in attendance.)

1956 - The Detroit Tigers and Briggs Stadium are sold for a record $5.5 million.

1964 - Little League Baseball Incorporated was granted a Federal Charter unanimously by Congress.

1970 - Three Rivers Stadium, home of the Pittsburgh Steelers and Pittsburgh Pirates, officially opened, as the Pirates lost to the Cincinnati Reds 3-2. (The stadium was demolished in 2001.)

1985 - The National League wins the All-Star Game 6-1 in Minneapolis. The game, broadcast by NBC, was the first television program broadcast nationwide in stereo sound.

1987 - Don Mattingly ties an American League record after hitting his fourth grand slam of the season.

1988 - Jackie Joyner-Kersee sets a new world record in the women's heptathlon with 7,215 points.

2000 - A 1919 Chicago 'Black Sox' autographed baseball is auctioned for $93,666 on eBay. The ball's autographs include "Shoeless" Joe Jackson.

2006 - Mariano Rivera of the New York Yankees records his 400th career save, becoming the fourth major leaguer to reach the milestone.
