1789 - The storming and destruction of Bastille marked the beginning of the French Revolution.

1798 - Congress passed the Sedition Act, making it a federal crime to publish false, scandalous or malicious writing about the U.S. government.

1881 - Outlaw William H. Bonney Jr., alias Billy the Kid, was shot and killed by Sheriff Pat Garrett in Fort Sumner, New Mexico.

1913 - Gerald R. Ford Jr., the 38th president of the United States, was born Leslie Lynch King Jr. in Omaha, Nebraska. (His mother's second husband later adopted and renamed him.)

1921 - Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti were convicted in Dedham, Massachusetts of killing a shoe company paymaster and his guard, in one of the most controversial cases in U.S. history. (They were executed in 1927.)

1933 - All German political parties except the Nazi Party were outlawed.

1945 - Italy formally declared war on Japan, its former Axis partner, during World War II.

1958 - The army of Iraq overthrew the monarchy.

1965 - The American space probe Mariner 4 flew by Mars, sending back photographs of the planet.

1966 - Eight student nurses were murdered by Richard Speck in a Chicago dormitory.

1976 - Jimmy Carter won the Democratic presidential nomination at the party's convention in New York City.

1999 - Race-based school busing in Boston ended after 25 years.

2003 - Journalist Robert Novak identified Valerie Plame as a CIA operative in his newspaper column, citing two Bush administration officials.

2004 - The Senate voted 50-48 against a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage.

1916 - St. Louis Browns' Ernie Koob pitches all 17 innings in a 0-0 tie versus Boston Red Sox.

1946 - Cleveland Indians' Lou Boudreau hits four doubles and home run but Boston Red Sox win 11-10 on Ted Williams' 3 homeruns with 8 RBIs.

1951 - CBS television's broadcast of a horse racing event was the first ever sports telecast broadcast in color.

1953 - The National League wins the All-Star Game 5-1 in Cincinnati.

1967 - Eddie Matthews of the Houston Astros hits his 500th home run.

1968 - Hank Aaron of the Atlanta Braves hits his 500th home run.

1968 - Don Wilson of the Houston Astros strikes out 18 batters in a 6-1 win over the Cincinnati Reds.

1969 - President Richard Nixon signed a baseball from the Baseball Hall of Fame that has the signatures of nine other U.S. presidents.

1970 - National League wins the All-Star Game 5-4 in 12 innings in Cincinnati.

1981 - The All-Star Game was postponed because of a 33-day-old players strike. (The game would be played on August 9.)

1985 - The Baltimore Stars defeat the Oakland Invaders 28-24 in the final USFL game played.

1987 - The National League wins the All-Star Game 2-0 in 13 innings in Oakland.

1988 - Mike Schmidt hits his 537th career home run, passing Mickey Mantle into 7th place all-time.

1999 - Major league baseball umpires voted to resign and not work the final month of the season.
