1798 - Congress passed the Sedition Act, making it a federal crime to publish false, scandalous or malicious writing about the U.S. government.
1881 - Outlaw William H. Bonney Jr., alias Billy the Kid, was shot and killed by Sheriff Pat Garrett in Fort Sumner, New Mexico.
1913 - Gerald R. Ford Jr., the 38th president of the United States, was born Leslie Lynch King Jr. in Omaha, Nebraska. (His mother's second husband later adopted and renamed him.)

1951 - CBS television's broadcast of a horse racing event was the first ever sports telecast broadcast in color.
1953 - The National League wins the All-Star Game 5-1 in Cincinnati.
1967 - Eddie Matthews of the Houston Astros hits his 500th home run.
1968 - Hank Aaron of the Atlanta Braves hits his 500th home run.
1968 - Don Wilson of the Houston Astros strikes out 18 batters in a 6-1 win over the Cincinnati Reds.
