1895 - Broadway lyricist Oscar Hammerstein II was born in New York City.

1908 - Comedian Milton Berle was born in New York City.

1972 - George McGovern won the Democratic presidential nomination at the party's convention in Miami Beach.

1984 - Democratic presidential candidate Walter F. Mondale nominated New York Congresswoman Geraldine A. Ferraro to be his running mate, maker her the first woman to run on a major party ticket.

2001 - Abner Louima, a Haitian immigrant tortured in a New York City police station, agreed to an $8.7 million settlement.

2006 - Hezbollah guerrillas kidnapped two Israeli soldiers and killed eight others in a cross-border raid; Israeli sent ground troops into Lebanon in response.

2010 - Roman Polanski was declared a free man, no longer confined to house arrest in his Alpine villa, after Swiss authorities rejected a U.S. request for the Oscar-winning director's extradition because of a 32-year-old sex conviction.

1949 - The American League won the All-Star Game 11-7 at Ebbets Field in Brooklyn.

1951 - Allie Reynolds of the New York Yankees no-hit the Cleveland Indians.

1955 - The National League won the All-Star Game 6-5 in 12 innings at County Stadium in Milwaukee.

1966 - The National League won the All-Star Game 2-1 in 10 innings at Busch Stadium in St. Louis. Brooks Robinson of the Baltimore Orioles was named MVP.

1979 - The Chicago White Sox were forced to forfeit the second game of a doubleheader with the Detroit Tigers because of an ill-conceived promotion "Disco Demolition" in which thousands of fans overran the field at Comiskey Park.

1984 - Steve Carlton of the Philadelphia Phillies recorded his 100th strikeout for the 18th consecutive season.

1988 - The American League won the All-Star Game 2-1 at Riverfront Stadium in Cincinnati. Terry Steinbach of the Oakland Athletics was named MVP.

1994 - The National League won the All-Star Game 8-7 in 10 innings at Three Rivers Stadium in Pittsburgh. Fred McGriff of the Atlanta Braves was named MVP.
