1832 - President Andrew Jackson vetoed legislation to re-charter the Second Bank of the United States.

1850 - Vice President Millard Fillmore became president following the death of Zachary Taylor.

1890 - Wyoming became the 44th state.

1940 - During World War II, the 114-day Battle of Britain began as Nazi forces began attacking southern England by air. By late October, Britain managed to repel the Luftwaffe, which suffered heavy losses.

1943 - U.S. and British forces invaded Sicily during World War II.

1951 - Armistice talks aimed at ending the Korean War began at Kaesong.

1962 - The Telstar communications satellite was launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida.

1964 - The album "A Hard Day's Night" by the Beatles was released.

1973 - The Bahamas became independent after three centuries of British colonial rule.

1985 - Coca-Cola Co., bowing to pressure from irate customers after the introduction of New Coke, said it would resume selling its old formula, calling it Coca-Cola Classic.

1989 - Mel Blanc, the "man of a thousand voices", including such characters as Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck and Porky Pig, died in Los Angeles.

1991 - President George H.W. Bush lifted economic sanctions against South Africa.

1991 - Boris Yeltsin took the oath of office as Russia's first elected president.

1992 - A federal judge in Miami sentenced former Panamanian leader Manuel Noriega to 40 years in prison on drug and racketeering charges.

2003 - Spain opened its first mosque since the Moors were expelled in 1492.

2006 - Chechen rebel leader Shamil Basayev was killed when a dynamite-laden truck in his convoy exploded.

2011 - Britain's best-selling Sunday tabloid the "News of the World", brought down by a phone-hacking scandal, published its last issue.

1901 - Harry Davis of the Philadelphia Athletics became the first American League player to hit for the cycle.

1934 - The American League won the All-Star Game 9-7 at the Polo Grounds in New York.

1951 - The National League won the All-Star Game 8-3 at Briggs Stadium in Detroit.

1956 - The National League won the All-Star Game 7-3 at Griffith Stadium in Washington, D.C.

1962 - The National League won the All-Star Game 3-1 at D.C. Stadium in Washington. This was the first All-Star Game that awarded an MVP honor, which went to Maury Wills of the Los Angeles Dodgers.

1984 - The National League won the All-Star Game 3-1 at Candlestick Park in San Francisco. Gary Carter of the Montreal Expos was named MVP.

1990 - The American League won the All-Star Game 2-0 at Wrigley Field in Chicago. Julio Franco of the Texas Rangers was named MVP.

1999 - The U.S. women's soccer team defeated China 5-4 in penalty kicks to win the World Cup at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California in front of more than 90,000 fans.

2001 - The American League won the All-Star Game 4-1 at Safeco Field in Seattle. Cal Ripken Jr. of the Baltimore Orioles was named MVP.

2003 - Army announced it was leaving Conference USA following the 2004 season and returning to Independent status.

2003 - The Big East Conference announced Connecticut would be joining the league in football in 2004.

2007 - The American League won their 10th All-Star Game in the last 11 years with a 5-4 win at AT&T Park in San Francisco. Ichiro Suzuki of the Seattle Mariners was named MVP.

2009 - Jonathan Sanchez of the San Francisco Giants no-hit the San Diego Padres. He was the first Giants pitcher to throw a no-hitter since 1976.

2012 - The National League won the All-Star Game 8-0 at Kaufman Stadium in Kansas City. Melky Cabrera of the San Francisco Giants was named MVP.

2014 - Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw saw his scoreless innings pitched streak come to an end at 41 innings.
