1649 - King Charles I of England was beheaded for high treason.

1882 - Franklin D. Roosevelt, the 32nd president of the United States, was born in Hyde Park, New York.

1883 - James Ritty and John Birch received a patent for the first cash register.

1933 - The first episode of the "Lone Ranger" was broadcast on radio station WXYZ in Detroit.

1933 - Adolf Hitler was named Chancellor of Germany.

1945 - During World War II, a Soviet submarine torpedoed the German ship MV Wilhelm Gustloff in the Baltic Sea with the loss of more than 9,000 lives, most of them war refugees; roughly 1,000 people survived; Adolf Hitler marked the 12th anniversary of his appointment as Germany’s chancellor with his last public speech in which he called on Germans to keep resisting until victory.

1948 - Indian political and spiritual leader Mahatma Gandhi was murdered by a Hindu extremist.

1962 - Two members of “The Flying Wallendas” high-wire act were killed when their seven-person pyramid collapsed during a performance at the State Fair Coliseum in Detroit.

1968 - North Vietnamese forces launched attacks against the South Vietnamese, beginning the Tet offensive.

1969 - The Beatles performed in public for the last time in a 45-minute gig on the roof of their Apple Records headquarters in London.

1972 - British troops opened fire on civil rights marchers in Northern Ireland, sparking the "Bloody Sunday" massacre.

1974 - President Richard Nixon delivered what would be his last State of the Union address; Nixon pledged to rein in rising prices without the “harsh medicine of recession” and establish a national health care plan that every American could afford.

1979 - The Iranian civil government announced that the exiled Ayatollah Khomeini would be allowed to return.

1981 - An estimated 2 million New Yorkers turned out for a ticker-tape parade honoring the American hostages freed from Iran.

1993 - Los Angeles inaugurated its Metro Red Line, the city’s first modern subway.

2003 - Richard Reid, a British citizen and al-Qaida follower, was sentenced to life in prison by a federal judge in Boston for trying to blow up a trans-Atlantic jetliner with explosives hidden in his shoes.

2005 - Iraqis voted in their country's first free election in a half-century.

2006 - Coretta Scott King, the widow of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., died at age 78.

2007 - Microsoft launched the Windows Vista operating system.

2010 - China suspended military exchange visits with the United States in protest over $6.4 billion in planned U.S. arms sales to Taiwan. (Those exchanges were reinstated in Jan. 2011.)

2015 - Death Row Records co-founder Marion “Suge” Knight was arrested on suspicion of hitting and killing a man with his truck and fleeing the scene of the crash near Los Angeles. (Knight is serving a 28-year sentence after pleading no contest to voluntary manslaughter.)

2019 - President Donald Trump lashed out at his intelligence chiefs after they told Congress that North Korea was unlikely to dismantle its nuclear arsenal and that the Iran nuclear deal was working; Trump tweeted, “Perhaps Intelligence should go back to school!”

1910 - Work began on the first board-track automobile speedway. The track was built in Playa del Ray, California.

1920 - Joe Malone (Quebec Nordiques) scored seven goals against the Toronto St. Patricks in a 10-6 win.

1983 - The Washington Redskins defeat the Miami Dolphins 27-17 in Pasadena, California to win Super Bowl XVII. Washington running back John Riggins is named MVP.

1990 - Wayne Gretzky of the Los Angeles Kings sets an NHL record with his 100th point in 11 consecutive seasons.

1994 - The Dallas Cowboys defeated the Buffalo Bills 30-13 to win Super Bowl XXVIII in Atlanta. Dallas running back Emmitt Smith is named MVP. It was the fourth consecutive year in which the Buffalo Bills advanced to the Super Bowl and lost.

1994 - Dan Jansen of the United States set a world record of 35.76 when he became the first to skate 500 meters in less than 36 seconds.

1996 - Magic Johnson comes out of a five-year retirement, helping the Los Angeles Lakers to a 128-118 win over the Golden State Warriors. Johnson recorded 19 points, 8 rebounds and 10 assists.

2000 - The St. Louis Rams defeat the Tennessee Titans 23-16 in Atlanta to win Super Bowl XXXIV. St. Louis quarterback Kurt Warner is named MVP.

2000 - The New York Mets announced that country music superstar Garth Brooks would be training with the team, beginning February 20th.

2000 - John Rocker (Atlanta Braves) was suspended from major league baseball for disparaging foreigners, homosexuals and minorities in an interview published by Sports Illustrated.

2002 - Karl Malone of the Utah Jazz becomes the second player in NBA history to score 34,000 career points, trailing only Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's 38,387.

2018 - James Harden of the Houston Rockets records the highest-scoring triple-double in NBA history with 60 points, 10 rebounds and 11 assists in a 114-107 win over the Orlando Magic.
