1985 - Dennis Potvin ties Bobby Orr's NHL record of 270 career goals.
1989 - Wayne Gretzky passes Marcel Dionne to become the NHL's second all-time scorer.
1990 - John McEnroe becomes the first tennis player ever expelled from the Australian Open for throwing a tantrum and swearing at an official.
1995 - John Stockton of the Utah Jazz became the NBA's all-time assists leader with 9,922.
1997 - Don Mattingly of the New York Yankees announced his retirement from baseball.
