1492 - Muhammad XI, the leader of the last Arab stronghold in Spain, surrendered to King Ferdinand II and Queen Isabella I.

1788 - Georgia became the fourth state.

1839 - Louis Jacques Mande Daguerre took the first photograph of the Moon.

1905 - The Russo-Japanese War ended.

1923 - The African American town of Rosewood, Florida was burned by a white mob.

1935 - The Bruno Hauptmann trial began for the kidnap and murder of the Lindbergh baby.

1942 - The Philippine capital of Manila was captured by Japanese forces during World War II.

1959 - The first spacecraft to fly to the Moon and also to orbit the Sun, Luna 1, was launched by the Soviet Union.

1974 - President Richard Nixon signed legislation requiring states to limit highway speeds to 55 miles per hour as a way of conserving gasoline in the face of an OPEC oil embargo. (The 55 mph limit was effectively phased out in 1987; federal speed limits were abolished in 1995.)

1994 - Rudy Giuliani is inaugurated as mayor of New York City.

2016 - A heavily armed group led by brothers Ammon and Ryan Bundy seized the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge in Oregon, beginning a 41-day standoff to protest the imprisonment of two ranchers convicted of setting fires on public land and to demand the federal government turn over public lands to local control.

1943 - University of Kentucky Wildcats men's basketball team begins 129 home game winning streak that only ends in 1955.

1965 - "Broadway" Joe Namath signed the richest rookie contract ($400,000) in the history of pro football.

1966 - The Green Bay Packers defeat the Cleveland Browns 23-12 in the final NFL championship game before the "Super Bowl" era.

1971 - In Glasgow, Scotland, 66 people were crushed when fans trying to leave encountered fans trying to return after hearing that a late goal had been scored.

1972 - Elvis Presley gave Muhammad Ali a $10000 robe with "People's Champion" inscribed on it. Ali wore the robe on March 31, 1973 when he lost to Ken Norton.

1983 - Ken Anderson (Cincinnati Bengals) completed 20 consecutive passes to set an NFL record for passing accuracy.

1984 - Miami (FL) defeats Nebraska 31-30 to win the Orange Bowl and the national championship.

1985 - The Rebels of UNLV beat Utah State in three overtime periods. The final score of 142-140 set a new NCAA record for total points in a basketball game (282). The game took over three hours to play. The game was also head coach Jerry Tarkanian's 600th career victory.

1986 - Mike Bossy (New York Islanders) scored his 500th career NHL goal.

1996 - Nebraska defeats Florida 62-24 to win the Fiesta Bowl and a second consecutive national championship.

1998 - Nebraska defeats Tennessee 42-17 in the Orange Bowl to claim a share of the national championship.

2002 - Ron Francis (Carolina Hurricanes) scored his 500th career NHL goal. Francis became only the fifth player in NHL history to reach 500 goals and 1,000 assists.

2023 - Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin suffered cardiac arrest after making a tackle during the first quarter of an NFL game against the Cincinnati Bengals, requiring life-saving treatment on the field. (The game was canceled; Hamlin would make a full recovery and return to play the following season.)
