27 B.C. - Caesar Augustus was declared the first Emperor of the Roman Empire by the Senate.

1547 - Ivan IV "Ivan the Terrible" was crowned the fist czar of Russia.

1865 - Union Maj. Gen. William T. Sherman decreed that 400,000 acres of land in the South would be divided into 40-acre lots and given to former slaves. (The order, later revoked by President Andrew Johnson, is believed to have inspired the expression, "Forty acres and a mule".)

1883 - The U.S. Civil Service Commission was established.

1920 - A year after it was ratified, the 18th Amendment to the Constitution, prohibiting the sale of alcoholic beverages, went into effect.

1944 - Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower took command of the Allied invasion force in London.

1957 - Three B-52's took off from Castle Air Force Base in California on the first non-stop, round-the-world flight by jet planes, which lasted 45 hours and 19 minutes.

1964 - The musical "Hello, Dolly!" opened on Broadway, beginning a run of 2,844 performances.

1967 - Alan S. Boyd was sworn in as the nation's first Secretary of Transportation.

1973 - The final episode of the western show "Bonanza" aired on NBC.

1978 - NASA named 35 candidates to fly on the space shuttle, including Sally K. Ride, who became America's first woman in space, and Guion S. Bluford Jr., who became America's first black astronaut.

1989 - Three days of rioting erupted in Miami when a police officer fatally shot a black motorcyclist, causing a crash that also claimed the life of a passenger.

1991 - Operation Desert Storm was announced by the White House to drive Iraqi forces out of Kuwait.

1992 - The government of El Salvador signed a peace treaty with guerrilla forces, formally ending 12 years of civil war.

2001 - Laurent Kabila, president of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, was assassinated.

2003 - Space shuttle Columbia blasted off on what would be its final mission. The craft would breakup on its descent on February 1st, during re-entry, killing everyone on board.

2004 - Pop star Michael Jackson pleaded innocent to child molestation charges in Santa Maria, California. (Charges were later re-filed and Jackson was acquitted.)

2007 - Illinois Sen. Barack Obama launched his campaign for the presidency of the United States.

1896 - The first five-player college basketball game was played in Iowa City, Iowa.

1955 - West beats East 26-19 in the NFL Pro Bowl.

1961 - Mickey Mantle signed a contract which made him the highest paid baseball player in the American League with a $75,000 salary for the 1961 season.

1964 - American League owners vote 9-1 against Charlie Finley moving the Kansas City Athletics to Louisville, Kentucky.

1970 - The NFL re-aligns from four divisions down to three divisions.

1972 - The Dallas Cowboys defeat the Miami Dolphins 24-3 in New Orleans to win Super Bowl VI. Cowboys quarterback Roger Staubach was named MVP.

1974 - Mickey Mantle and Whitey Ford are elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame.

1981 - Ivan Lendl intentionally loses a match at the Volvo Masters in order to avoid having to play Bjorn Borg.

1988 - Jimmy "The Greek" Snyder is fired from CBS for racial remarks he made.

1988 - The NFL's St. Louis Cardinals announce their move to Phoenix, Arizona.

1993 - Michael Jordan of the Chicago Bulls scored 64 points against the Orlando Magic. It was his second-highest single-game total of his career.

1995 - Malcolm Glazer bought the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for an estimated $192 million.

2002 - Baseball owners approved the record $660 million sale of the Boston Red Sox.
