1570 - Elizabeth I, queen of England, was excommunicated by Pope Pius V.

1793 - President George Washington held the first Cabinet meeting on record at his Mount Vernon home; attending were Secretary of State Thomas Jefferson, Treasury Secretary Alexander Hamilton, Secretary of War Henry Knox and Attorney General Edmund Randolph.

1836 - Samuel Colt patented the first revolving barrel multishot firearm.

1870 - Hiram Revels became the first black U.S. senator, taking over the term of Jefferson Davis in Mississippi.

1901 - J.P. Morgan formed U.S. Steel Corporation, the first billion-dollar corporation in the world.

1913 - The 16th Amendment to the Constitution, giving Congress the power to levy and collect income taxes, was declared in effect.

1948 - Communists took control of the government in Czechoslovakia.

1983 - Playwright Tennessee Williams died at age 71.

1986 - President Ferdinand Marcos fled the Philippines; Corazon Aquino too over the office.

1990 - Violeta Chamorro was elected president of Nicaragua, a victory for opponents of the Sandinistas.

1991 - An Iraqi scud missile hit a U.S. barracks in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, killing 28 Americans during the Persian Gulf War.

1999 - A jury in Jasper, Texas, sentenced white supremacist John William King to death for the dragging death of James Byrd Jr., an African-American man.

2008 - A 2006 Associated Press photograph of Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama wearing traditional local garb during a visit to Kenya began circulating online; the Obama campaign accused Hillary Clinton's campaign of being responsible, a charge rejected by Clinton officials.

2013 - A high-stakes civil trial started in New Orleans to assign blame and help figure out exactly how much more BP and other companies should pay for the 2010 Gulf oil spill. (U.S. District Judge Carl Barbier ruled in September 2014 that BP acted with "gross negligence"; BP ended up reaching a record-setting $20 billion settlement with the federal government and five Gulf states.)

1933 - Major NFL rule changes: hash mark 10 yards in, posts on goal line.

1940 - The New York Rangers and the Montreal Canadiens played in the first hockey game to be televised in the U.S. The game was aired on W2WBS in New York with one camera in a fixed position. The Rangers beat the Canadiens 6-2.

1941 - Boston Bruins set NHL record of 23-game unbeaten streak (15-0-8).

1951 - The first Pan American Games opened in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

1957 - The U.S. Supreme Court ruled 6-3 that baseball was the only professional sport exempt from antitrust laws.

1964 - Cassius Clay (Muhammad Ali) became world heavyweight boxing champion for the first time by knocking out Sonny Liston in Miami Beach.

1977 - New Orleans' Pete Maravich sets NBA record for a guard with 68 points.

1981 - The Boston Bruins and Minnesota North Stars set a record for most penalties in a game with 84 for a total of 392 minutes.

1989 - Dallas Cowboys fire coach Tom Landry after a 29-year career.

1989 - Mike Tyson TKOs Frank Bruno in five rounds for heavyweight boxing title.

2002 - Jayson Williams, the former NBA star, surrendered to New Jersey police. He was charged with second-degree manslaughter in the death of Costas Christofi. Christofi was killed by a shotgun that was recklessly handled by Williams. Williams was released on $250,000 bail.

2005 - Walt Disney Co. agreed to sell the Anaheim Mighty Ducks to billionaire Henry Samueli.
