1945 - President Harry S. Truman signed the United Nations Charter.

1945 - The Soviet Union declared war against Japan during World War II.

1963 - Britain's "Great Train Robbery" took place as thieves made off with 2.6 million pounds (approximately $6 million) in banknotes from a train they stopped north of London.

1968 - Richard Nixon was nominated for president at the Republican National Convention in Miami and chose Maryland Gov. Spiro T. Agnew as his running mate.

1969 - Sharon Tate, wife of director Roman Polanski, and four others were murdered by members of Charles Manson's "family".

1900 - The first Davis Cup tennis tournament began at the Longwood Cricket Club in Brookline, Massachusetts. The United States defeated Great Britain three matches to none.

1903 - Joe McGinnity of the New York Giants pitched two complete games in one day in 6-1 and 4-3 wins over the Brooklyn Dodgers.

1961 - The Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the CFL defeated the Buffalo Bills 38-21 in Ontario.

1970 - The New York Yankees retired Casey Stengel's #37.

1972 - The New York Yankees signed a 30-year lease with the City of New York which called for Yankee Stadium to be completely modernized in time for the 1976 season.

1973 - Orlando Cepeda of the Boston Red Sox hits four doubles against the Kansas City Royals.

1977 - The Texas Rangers turn a triple play against the New York Yankees.

1984 - Carl Lewis, by winning the 200 meter dash, wins his third gold medal of the Los Angeles Summer Olympic Games.

1988 - Goose Gossage records his 300th career save.

1988 - Jose Canseco of the Oakland Athletics becomes the 11th player in major league history to record 30 home runs and 30 stolen bases in a season.

1988 - The Minnesota Twins record their second triple play of the season in a game against the Cleveland Indians.

1990 - The Baltimore Orioles turn a triple play against the Oakland Athletics.

1990 - Carlton Fisk ties Johnny Bench's major league record of 327 home runs by a catcher.

1992 - The "Dream Team" won the gold medal in men's basketball at the Summer Olympic Games in Barcelona, Spain after defeating Croatia 117-85 in the final. They won their eight games in Olympic competition by an average of 44 points. Team members were: Charles Barkley, Larry Bird, Clyde Drexler, Patrick Ewing, Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan, Christian Laettner, Karl Malone, Chris Mullin, Scottie Pippen, David Robinson and John Stockton. The team was coached by Chuck Daly and assisted by Mike Krzyzewski, Lenny Wilkens, and P.J. Carlesimo.

1998 - Paul Molitor of the Minnesota Twins stole his 500th career base.

1999 - Wade Boggs recorded his 3,000th career hit.

2002 - Major League Baseball players and owners agreed to a $100,000 increase in baseball's minimum salary. The minimum was set at $300,000 starting in 2003.

2005 - Hockey great Wayne Gretzky was named the next head coach of the Phoenix Coyotes.

2008 - The Summer Olympic Games opened in Beijing, China. An estimated 1 billion people worldwide watch the opening ceremonies on television.
