1735 - Printer John Peter Zenger, defended by Andrew Hamilton, was acquitted of libel in a case that helped foster freedom of the press.

1790 - The U.S. Coast Guard had its beginnings as President George Washington signed a measure authorizing a group of revenue cutters to enforce tariff and trade laws and prevent smuggling.

1830 - Plans for the city of Chicago were laid out.

1892 - Andrew and Abby Borden were axed to death in their home in Fall River, Massachusetts. (Lizzie Borden, Andrew Borden's daughter from a previous marriage, was accused of the killings, though she was later acquitted.)

1901 - Jazz trumpeter Louis Armstrong was born.

1914 - Britain declared war on Germany after the Germans invaded Belgium while the United States proclaimed its neutrality during World War I.

1916 - Denmark ceded the Danish West Indies, including the Danish Virgin Islands, to the United States for $25 million.

1944 - Anne Frank and her family were found hiding in Amsterdam by the Nazis.

1964 - The bodies of three missing civil rights workers were found buried in an earthen dam in Mississippi.

1977 - President Jimmy Carter signed a measure establishing the Department of Energy.

1987 - The Federal Communications Commission voted to rescind the Fairness Doctrine, which required radio and TV stations to present balanced coverage of controversial issues.

1994 - Serb-dominated Yugoslavia withdrew its support for Bosnian Serbs, sealing the 300-mile border between Yugoslavia and Serb-held Bosnia.

2002 - A Palestinian suicide bomber blew up a bus in northern Israel during rush hour, killing nine passengers.

2005 - A mini-submarine carrying seven Russians caught on an underwater antenna 600 feet below the surface of the Pacific Ocean; the men were rescued three days later with help from a British vessel.

1910 - Philadelphia Athletics' Jack Coombs and Chicago White Sox' Ed Walsh pitch a 16-inning scoreless tie.

1934 - Mel Ott of the New York Giants became the first player in major league history to score six runs in a single game.

1945 - Golfer Byron Nelson sets a PGA record by winning his 18th tournament of the season.

1982 - New York Mets' Joel Youngblood singles in Chicago Cubs' day game, then singles for Montreal Expos in Philadelphia night game. (He was traded in between).

1983 - New York Yankees outfield Dave Winfield threw a baseball during warm-ups and accidentally hit and killed a seagull. After the game, Toronto police arrested him for "causing unnecessary suffering to an animal."

1985 - Tom Seaver of the Chicago White Sox recorded his 300th victory.

1985 - Rod Carew of the California Angels recorded his 3,000th hit.

1985 - The New York Yankees retire Phil Rizzuto's #10.

1986 - The United States Football League (USFL) called off its 1986 season after winning only token damages ($1) in its antitrust lawsuit against the NFL.

1996 - Josia Thugwane won the men's marathon at the Atlanta Summer Olympic Games, becoming the first black athlete from South Africa to win an Olympic gold medal.

1996 - The Summer Olympic Games in Atlanta come to a close. The United States dominated the medal count with 101 total medals. Germany finished second with 65. The U.S. outpaced Russia to take home the most gold medals 44 to 26.

2007 - Barry Bonds of the San Francisco Giants tied Hank Aaron's major league record with his 755th career home run.

2010 - Alex Rodriguez of the New York Yankees becomes the youngest (at age 35) and seventh player overall to hit 600 career home runs.
