1797 - "Frankenstein" author Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley was born in London.

1862 - Union forces were defeated by the Confederates at the Second Battle of Bull Run in Manassas, Virginia.

1893 - Huey P. Long, the "Kingfish" of Louisiana politics, was born in Winn Parish, Louisiana.

1941 - Nazi forces began a siege of Leningrad during World War II that lasted nearly two and a half years.

1945 - Gen. Douglas MacArthur arrived in Japan and set up Allied occupation headquarters.

1954 - President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed the Atomic Energy Act of 1954, which was intended to promote private development of nuclear energy.

1905 - Baseball Hall of Famer Ty Cobb made his major league debut with the Detroit Tigers.

1910 - Tom Hughes of the New York Yankees pitches nine no-hit innings but loses to the Cleveland Naps 5-0 in 11 innings.

1912 - St. Louis Browns' pitcher Earl Hamilton no-hits the Detroit Tigers.

1913 - The Philadelphia Phillies lead the New York Giants 8-6 in the top of the 9th, fans in bleachers try to distract the Giants and as a result umpires forfeit the game to the Giants. The decision was later overruled.

1916 - Dutch Leonard of the Boston Red Sox no-hits the St. Louis Browns.

1918 - Baseball Hall of Famer Ted Williams was born in San Diego.

1939 - Atley Donald of the New York Yankees pitches a baseball a record 94.7 mph.

1941 - Lon Warneke of the St. Louis Cardinals no-hits the Cincinnati Reds.

1965 - Casey Stengel announces his retirement after 55 years in baseball.

1984 - Jim Rice of the Boston Red Sox sets a new major league record with his 33rd double play of the season.

1987 - Ben Johnson of Canada sets a new world record in the 100 meter dash at 9.83 seconds. Also, Stefka Kostadinova of Bulgaria sets a new world record in the women's high jump at 6' 10.25".

1991 - Dan O'Brien sets a U.S. decathlon record with 8,812 points.

1991 - American Mike Powell sets a new world record in the long jump at 29' 4.5".

1997 - #6 Nebraska defeated Akron 59-14 to open the season.

2001 - Ashley Martin became the first woman to play in a Division I football game. She kicked three extra points for the Division I-AA Jacksonville State Gamecocks against Cumberland University.

2003 - Nebraska upset #24 Oklahoma State 17-7 to open the season.

2008 - Nebraska defeated Western Michigan 47-24 in Bo Pelini's first game as head coach for the Nebraska football team.
