1770 - German philosopher Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel was born in Stuttgart.

1859 - Edwin L. Drake drilled the first successful U.S. oil well near Titusville, Pennsylvania.

1883 - The island volcano Krakatoa erupted and the resulting tidal waves claimed more than 36,000 lives in the Indonesian islands of Sumatra and Java.

1908 - Lyndon B. Johnson, the 36th president of the United States, was born.

1928 - The Kellogg-Briand Pact was signed in Paris, outlawing war and providing for the peaceful settlement of disputes.

1945 - American troops began landing in Japan following the surrender of the Japanese government in World War II.

1962 - The United States launched the Mariner 2 space probe, which flew past Venus the following December.

1967 - The Beatles' manager, Brian Epstein, was found dead from an overdose of sleeping pills.

1975 - Haile Selassie, the last emperor of Ethiopia's 3,000-year-old monarchy, died in Addis Ababa almost a year after being overthrown.

1911 - Ed Walsh of the Chicago White Sox no-hit the Boston Red Sox.

1921 - J.E. Clair of the Acme Packing Company of Green Bay, Wisconsin was granted an APFA franchise. Clair paid tribute to those who worked in his plant by naming the team the Green Bay Packers.

1937 - Fred Frankhouse of the Brooklyn Dodgers no-hits the Cincinnati Reds.

1938 - Monte Pearson of the New York Yankees no-hits the Cleveland Indians. Joe DiMaggio also hit three triples in the game in a 13-0 Yankee win.

1977 - Toby Harrah and Bump Wills hit back-to-back inside-the-park home runs for the Texas Rangers at Yankee Stadium.

1978 - Joe Morgan of the Cincinnati Reds is the first player in major league history with 200 home runs and 500 stolen bases.

1982 - Rickey Henderson steals his 112th base of the season, breaking Lou Brock's single-season record.

2005 - Jeff Kent of the Los Angeles Dodgers becomes the first second baseman in major league history to hit 300 home runs.

2007 - Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick pleaded guilty in Richmond, Virginia to a federal dogfighting charge.
