1847 - Liberia was proclaimed an independent republic.

1883 - The island volcano of Krakatoa began cataclysmic eruptions, leading to a massive explosion the following day.

1910 - Mother Teresa was born Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu in Macedonia.

1920 - The 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, guaranteeing women the right to vote, was declared in effect.

1957 - The Soviet Union announced that it had successfully tested an intercontinental ballistic missile.

1958 - Alaskans went to the polls and voted overwhelmingly in favor of statehood.

1964 - President Lyndon B. Johnson was nominated for a term of office in his own right at the Democratic National Convention in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

1974 - Aviation pioneer Charles Lindbergh died at age 72.

1978 - Cardinal Albino Luciani of Venice was elected the 264th Pope of the Roman Catholic Church and took the name John Paul I. (He died one month later.)

1985 - 13-year-old AIDS patient Ryan White began "attending" classes at Western Middle School in Kokomo, Indiana, via a telephone hook-up at his home after school officials had barred Ryan from attending in person.

1986 - In the so-called "preppie murder case", 18-year-old Jennifer Levin was found strangled in New York's Central Park. (Robert Chambers later plead guilty to manslaughter and served 15 years in prison.)

2003 - Investigators concluded that NASA's overconfident management and inattention to safety doomed the space shuttle Columbia as much as damage to the craft did.

2009 - Authorities in California solved the 18-year disappearance of Jaycee Lee Dugard after she appeared at a parole office with her children and the Antioch couple who had kidnapped her when she was 11.

1961 - The Hockey Hall of Fame opened in Toronto.

1962 - Jack Kralick of the Minnesota Twins no-hits the Kansas City Athletics.

1971 - The New York Giants football team announces its is leaving the Bronx for a new home in New Jersey in 1975.

1972 - The Summer Olympic Games open in Munich, Germany.

1985 - Eddie Murray of the Baltimore Orioles records nine RBI's in a game against the California Angels.

1989 - The Trumbull (Connecticut) All-Stars become the first American team to win the Little League World Series since 1983.

1991 - Brett Saberhagen of the Kansas City Royals no-hits the Chicago White Sox.

2001 - #4 Nebraska defeated Texas Christian 21-7 to win the season opening Pigskin Classic.

2002 - The first video streaming coverage of a Major League Baseball game takes place on the Internet. Approximately 30,000 fans visited MLB.com to see the New York Yankees defeat the Texas Rangers 10-3.
