79 - Mount Vesuvius erupted, burying the Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum in volcanic ash. An estimated 20,000 people died.

1572 - The slaughter of 70,000 French Protestants at the hands of Catholics began in Paris.

1814 - British forces invaded Washington, D.C. and set fire to the Capitol and the White House during the War of 1812.

1821 - Mexico gained its independence from Spain with the Treaty of Cordoba.

1857 - The New York branch of the Ohio Life Insurance and Trust Co. failed, sparking the Panic of 1857.

1912 - Congress passed a measure creating the Alaska Territory.

2006 - The International Astronomical Union declared that Pluto was no longer a planet, demoting it to the status of "dwarf planet".

2007 - A judge in Inverness, Florida sentenced John Evander Couey to death for kidnapping 9-year-old Jessica Lunsford, raping her and burying her alive.

2007 - James Ford Seale, a reputed Ku Klux Klansman, was sentenced to three life terms for his role in the 1964 abduction and murder of two black teenagers in Mississippi.

2011 - Steve Jobs resigned as CEO of Apple Inc.

1905 - The Chicago Cubs beat the Philadelphia Phillies 2-1 in 20 innings.

1906 - John Weimer of the Cincinnati Reds no-hits the Brooklyn Dodgers.

1912 - New York City holds a ticker-tape parade for Jim Thorpe and victorious U.S. Olympic athletes.

1922 - Cy Williams of the Philadelphia Phillies hits for the cycle.

1963 - John Pennel becomes the first pole vaulter to break the 17-foot barrier.

1964 - The Second Mayor's Trophy game was played, an exhibition game between New York City's two major league baseball teams, with the Yankees beating the Mets 6-4.

1972 - Gordie Howe and John Beliveau were inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame.

1975 - Ed Halick of the San Francisco Giants no-hits the New York Mets.

1984 - Pat Bradley set an LPGA record for 9 holes with a 28 in Denver, Colorado.

1989 - Baseball Commissioner A. Bartlett Giamatti banned Pete Rose from baseball for life for gambling on the game.

2002 - #10 Nebraska defeated Arizona State 48-10 to open the season.

2007 - The NFL suspended Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick for his involvement in a dogfighting operation.

2008 - The Olympic Games in Beijing, China closed. The United States won the medal count with 110, host China was close behind with 100 total medals. The Chinese did win the gold medal race, for the first time, with 51 first-place finishes. The United States was second with 36 golds.
