1947 - For the first time, a college all-star team beat an NFL team as the college all-stars defeated the Chicago Bears 16-0.

1959 - Frank Robinson of the Cincinnati Reds hits three consecutive home runs.

1984 - Evelyn Ashford of the United States ties the world record in the women's 100 meter dash with a time of 10.76 seconds.

1984 - New York Mets rookie pitcher Dwight Gooden becomes the 11th rookie in baseball history to strikeout 200 batters in a season.

1989 - Nolan Ryan strikes out his 5,000th career batter.

2003 - Albert Pujols of the St. Louis Cardinals went 0-for-5 at the plate to end a 30-game hitting streak.

2007 - The Texas Rangers score 30 runs in one game, setting the modern (post 1900) major league record for most runs by one team in a single game, in a 30-3 win over the Baltimore Orioles.

2008 - Usain Bolt of Jamaica wins his third gold medal and sets his third world record at the Olympic Games in Beijing, leading his country's 4x100 meter relay team to a first-place finish in a record time of 37.10 seconds.
